Sarcoscypha coccinea
Fungi > Ascomycota > Pezizomycetidae > Pezizales > Sarcoscyphaceae

Today it was quite cold here. At the beggining of my walk, the sun tryed to evaporate the soaked wood. But 4 hours later I was rushing through the forest scaping from the heil. I always get a transparent umbrella with me. It is very practical, appart from using it for the rain, and as a walking stick, is perfect to take macros sheltered from the water and wind but without decreesing the light ;-)

The journey was not too bad, considering that today my aim was to "investigate" for more remote paths to look for my fungi next season. I found very promising places !

Some info:
Fruitbody Sporocarp cupulate, cup-shaped, with or without stipe; on internal side of cup (fertile) bright karmin-red, scarlet, brick-red, margin inturned, whitish; on exterior (sterile) pink, ocher, tomentose; 10-50 mm broad; stipe short or long depending how deep wood is.
Spores elongated, ellipsoid, smooth, hyaline with numerous drops, 29-39 x 9-11(13) µm.
Habitat Not common. Fruitbodies late winter (when temperature above 0) and in early spring, on rotten and buried hardwood in parks and forests.
Edibility: Inedible.
Remarks: Not so long ago there was one specie in Sarcoscypha - Sarcoscypha coccinea. Now there is few. Sarcoscypha coccinea s. str. grown in late fall and early spring, on lowlands, on hardwood such as Fagus (beech), Ulmus, Corylus, Salix (willow), Querscus (oak) and from Rosaceae family.

I found this info HERE.

Another fantastic Fungi shot. Color and detail are great. I have not ever observed any fungi like that growing around where I live, but your great photos are making me look alot harder for these types of shots to try. Nice Work!

I do like it Felipe. Such a beautiful colour Fungi. Something I have never seen before. They look like torn up red plastic balls. Excellent capture and colours. I like the busy ground they are growing on too. TFS.

Your photos continue to inspire me. I love the color here and the time of year is very apparent. I also was educated by your little note about your umbrella choice. Thank you!
