After a short break away from TrekNature I’ll today return with a picture from the “Fire Mountains ", the “Montañas de Fuego" on the Canarian Island of Lanzarote. My husband (Ivan – Argus) and I spent a week on Lanzarote and having earlier visited the “green” island of Tenerife this was an amazing experience and a complete contrast. The lack of greens is striking and instead the numerous shades of black-grey-brown-orange fringed by the blue sea dominate the landscape. The native flora and fauna is very limited but interesting. In 1968 the area was declared a national park.

The Timanfaya National Park is entirely made up of volcanos and located in the southwestern part of the island of Lanzarote. The area is 51square kilometeres in size. One of the world's most devastating and longest volcanic eruptions took place here and lasted from September 1730 until April 1736 when more than 100 volcanos, covering more than 50 km², rose up and devastated this part of the island (including several villages). The last eruptions were in 1824, however due to the low rainfall (and therefore lack of erosion) this area appears much the same as it did just after the eruptions. There is still volcanic activity underground today and the surface temperature just a few metres below the surface reach between 400°C and 600°C.
The only way to experience the core of the park is by bus ('Ruta de los Volcanes') that takes you through and around the volcanos themselves for 10 km on winding, very narrow paths. The scenery is very spectacular with the numerous lines of volcanoes, the 'tongues' of lava, the 'hornitos', the volcanic tubes and fields of ashes. (The picture is taken through the window of the bus as nobody is allowed out.)

Muchos saludos, JL.

Hello Ulla,
Amazing landscape - it may be both - an earth before life crawled out from the sea, or the terminal stage of our civilisation...
What a touching shot showing this sad yet beautiful area. A good note too!
Best greetings,
Michal
