Dericorys lobata

Only five species of grasshoppers have been recorded on the volcanic island of Lanzarote. We were quite excited as we managed to see four of these, the most exciting being this one with striking colours. We managed to find it in two different places.

Information about this species is sparce but according to the Biology dept. of the University of Osnabruck in Germany, who have carried out research on the Orthoptera on the Canary Islands, only three endemic subspecies occur on the islands of Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran anaria and Lanzarote. Two of these occur in coastal and sandy areas of Lanzarote. The sole food plant for this species is a kind of Glasswort belonging to the Chenopodiaceae family.

The quality of this shot is rather poor but it was really "hopping" around a lot and was hard to photograph. I therefore also include one in WS that we picked up which also illustrates the small size.

Well done Ulla.
Nice post showing this "uniquely" colored specimen well. So this hopper was a little bit too hoppy to make your camera Happy? ;-}}

Hi Ulla,
Interesting grasshopper. Well captured. Colors of BG seem to be too strong so that this grasshopper cannot be clearly viewed. May need to crop it a bit more, to lead viewer's eyes to the insect.

Hi Ulla,

A quite different grasshopper with white eyes,I guess I never seen this type before although I sometimes sail on the canary islands,sometimes we get navigational warnings about locust swarms flying from N Africa to the canaries,well seen and captured,
