Painted Ladies (Vanessa cardui) are commonly posted in to TN. They are, after all, one of the most widespread butterflies in the world.

In the middle of November, when we were there, they happened to be the most common butterfly on Lanzarote. In fact they were everywhere, especially in or near residential areas where there were some garden flowers.

They are resident on the Canary Islands, where the choice of larval host plant varies but includes Malva parviflora.

In the small fishing village of El Golfo there was a small ball pitch that had a few weeds (Heliotropum erosum) growing in the cracked concrete and there were a dozen very active Painted Ladies. They would settle for a few seconds to try for nectar then be off again. Not like the leisurely Painted Ladies we see taking their time on the Buddleias of Europe!

Apart from the numerous Painted Ladies we saw one much worn lycaenid and two flying Clouded Yellows.

I had the high shutter speed to counteract the high butterfly activity, but the relatively low aperture reduces the DOF considerably with a 420mm telephoto, especially at a range of 2 meters. This was the best shot of several attempts.

Hi Argus. A nice shot with DOF in BG allowing for good subject definition. You have done well to get both antennae sharp considering the angle between each. I've been to Lanzarote a few times but rarely noticed butterflies. I presumed volcanic chemicals on the island detrimental to butterfly life. That said I use a 105 sigma for pics of butterflies so I need get much closer than two metres. Cardui I found dont appreciate such closeness for pics. Well done!

Hi Ivan
Interesting POV and good DOF (antennas)I like delicate buckground color
Have a nice weekend

Exceptional sharp focus, outstanding DOF. Because the details of butterfly are so excellent, I think I would go full macro and crop left side to remove the out of focus "growth?" which distracts from beautiful butterfly. It will give square photo, but I think that is ok because of the angle of the butterfly. And, I like the natural angle as you have it.

Hi Ivan

A very beautiful capture here with this lovely butterfly!
The colors here are wonderful and the right exposure made sure that they will look at their best, the details are very clean and clear adn the shallow DOF works great!
Nice POV, framing and composition, too.

Bravo and TFS

This is nice Ivan. They may be common but they are still beautiful ladies, as is your photo. It is a really nice composition and the lovel soft colors in the background are really special.

We have the Canon 1.4 converter ordered to use with the 300mm f2.8 lens we just got. It looks like your image is pretty sharp. I hope it works as well with ours.

Hello Ivan,
perfectly well captured Lady with excellent details and natural colours, beautifully imbedded in soft colours.
Excellent result achieved from such a long distance.
The shallow depth of field makes this picture look pleasantly fragile and loaded with atmosphere like a painting.
And like a classical painting the picture is very thoughtfully composed. Beautiful.
Thank you! Best regards,
Peter

Nice shot of this beautiful butterfly. Good colours, sharpnes, light and POV.
Well done mf.

salut Ivan

the sharpness and the details of the butterfly are excellent
but it is the framing that i like most, one side of the image
is the butterfly and the other side the plant (or flower)
excellent framing that i like, TFS
