Another shot from Lanzarote. This is my second posting of this grasshopper and perhaps the better one. My camera finds it hard to focus when patterns are too vivid (I’d be grateful for advice on this) and I’m not satisfied with either of them. This is taken from 1 m distance and has been cropped. If I’d got really close and used super-macro it would have been better but then I’m sure he would have hopped away! When you see something rare like this you’d really like to get a perfect shot, but there we are, it’s a record at least. As I mentioned before we found this in two different places, the first time on black stones, the second on red stones!

Information about this species is sparce but according to the Biology dept. of the University of Osnabruck in Germany, who have carried out research on the Orthoptera on the Canary Islands, only three endemic subspecies occur on the islands of Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran anaria and Lanzarote. Two of these occur in coastal and sandy areas of Lanzarote. The sole food plant for this species is a kind of Glasswort belonging to the Chenopodiaceae family.

Hi Ulla

Another excellent shot of this very interesting hopper.
Its colors and contrast are indeed amazing and quite unique...al least for TN :)
I like the lighting and seeing him in his natural condition, with this lovely diagonal composition.
Very nicely done!

Amazing how insects adapt to the surroundings for survival, Ulla. The colours on this insect seem to have been determined by the need to camouflage itself against the background of those black and brown lava rocks and soil.
The image is perfect in terms of presentation of the insect's features; the in-focus rocky BG does not distract me.

Hello Ulla,
superb picture of this 'burnt' 'stonehopper'. With respect to its colours it appears well adapted to volcanic ground. I like the colours of both, the insect and the stones. Focus and sharpness are excellent. A beautifully composed picture.
Best wishes, Peter
