[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The shortage of water on Lanzarote restricts the creation of lawns. Instead, if waste ground is to be ‘tidied’ up the black or red volcanic grits are raked into flat areas interspersed with plants that tolerate dryness.

One late afternoon I left the hotel to a walk through such a ‘park’ and where it ended to give way to the original volcanic landscape, I came across this bird.

At first I thought that it was the rare Chat that had strayed from Lanzarote (posted recently), but I soon saw that this was a male Eurasian Stonechat (Saxicola torquata). It is more boldly marked, the breast being a deeper russet and the head lacking the white stripe of the rare chat.

This Stonechat obviously had its territory but lacked a mate, because through stonechats have been recorded on Lanzarote they are regarded as occasional strays from N. Africa. So unless a female happens to stray to this island he will be all alone until he dies. A sad story.

I took this shot in evening light at a distance of about ten meters with camera hand-held.

Hi Ivan.
Very nice and perfect composed shot. The captured scene is wonderful also as well as the attractive lighting of the bird and leaves, excellent details and sharpness of the image. Your hands are quite well. My compliments and TFS.
Alexei.

Well done Ivan.
Good exposure, detail, color, POV, and comp.
The single most important factor in getting a small bird shot, is simply getting close enough to fill the frame..
Have a nice day.

Hej Ivan
Nice captured bird staying free on the top of the tree. The sky is blue which is not here in Stockholm :( but that's life.

Your reconstruct of the story of this solitary migrant from north Africa is touching, Ivan.
The picture is vivid in spite of sizable distance between you and the subject.
Thanks for sharing pictorial moments of your visit to the Canarias.

Hello Ivan,
This is a sad story indeed... But it is a nice capture if this bird. I really like this POV, composition and details on the bird. I also like this nice blue BG but I think it is a bit noisy... Well done anyway with great notes and good lightning. Thanks,
Claudine

Hello Ivan,

Hola Iván,
Bonita toma de la tarabilla, con buena composición y nitidez. Saludos

Ivan, it is a nice photo of the little bird. I like the eye contact and sparkle in eye. But I think there is much noise present in the photo. See workshop. Hope you like.

Hi Ivan,
I have made some small changes in the workshop.
Salutacions cordials.
Ferran.

The composition of this was the very first thing to get my attention. I love that it's positioned to the right hand side of the frame instead of centre. Beautiful colours and loving that there is a bit of lighting caught in his eyes. Always good to be able to tell the eye from the surrounding area.
