I was looking for butterflies but there were only a few flying in the hot dry weather: the drought has severely reduced the numbers of butterflies even where there is enough moisture to allow the vegetation to remain green.

Such green areas occur where there is partial shade such as in more open parts and glades in our pine forests. As the sandy soil has a high lime content, orchids are to be found in the more moist and shaded parts.

I happened to find this Military Orchid (Orchis militaris) just starting to flower. This species is rare on the mainland of Sweden but fairly common on Öland.

I took a few shots and on looking closely at this one I was amazed to see a species of Dance Fly (Empis sp.) on one of the flowers.

Dance Flies (Empidae)can be recognised by their small round heads on a 'neck', their long legs and the long sharp dagger-like proboscis.
They are so-called because their behaviour, looking as though they dance with their long legs. They catch other insects and pierce them with their long sharp proboscis to suck up nutrients. Some species are called 'balloon flies' as they wrap up their prey in frothy spit.

This was taken at a distance of about 4 meters with the camera hand-held (originally to take in the whole orchid with leaves). After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was sharpened a little.

Hi Ivan,

Just ready to turn the computer off for the night and spotted these beautiful orchids. What a nice way to end the day! So nice to see the beautiful flowers and so many buds. The fly is a bonus - he is appreciating them too. Wonderful shades of violet and superb details.

Hi Ivan

A great composition, both the fly and orchid are very sharp with excellent colour and light. Well seen and captured.

James

Bellissima composizione con un'eccellente nitidezza e luminositā, ottimi POV e momento di cattura del piccolo insetto che sugge il "nettare" dal fiore. Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

Hi Ivan
Beautiful flower and small fly as a special bonus. Main object is nicely sparated from the OOF background. Nice field guide POV. Did you make a little noise reduction? Background looks great now but there is a part with noise in the right down corner and close to the flowers

I like it very much
TFS

Dear Ivan,
I was winding up for the day and just returned to the gallery to take one final look and lo! and behold you present a composition with an interesting title..and i had to know who was dancing in here ....my curiosity did help me today i 'm almost certain ...'because looking at your shot i think i have also found an ID for a macro that i shot recently. I think it is the same fly...i can almsot confirm from the profile of your subject here....now i atleast have a clue to start my research on...thank you for this help first of all.
And to your presentation, i am immensely glad to see this beautiful clump of orchid flowers on this morning as they look radiant under the sun creating a cheerful mood. The colours are brilliant and with good sharpness and contrasts.Well done.

Thank you for sharing this beauty ....

Cheers

I too noticed the Dance Fly first in this picture, Ivan.
But that is a bonus; the Orchid itself is a super beauty. It is so delicate with an array of lovely colours.
I shot a Skipper yesterday but not a single other species of butterflies in sight.
Regards,
Ram

Buen detalle y buen colorido.
Saludos
Jacobo

Hi Ivan,
besides the excellent picture of an Military orchid with the empidid fly that you present you raise an important issue here: how are orchids pollinated? Since they don't produce nectar and the pollen is in a big gluey package, why does the fly visit and re-visit? Of course Darwin saw this problem before and he made many important discoveries. Thanks for reminding us of the puzzling thing.
Best regards
Dietrich

Hello Ivan,
Splendid colours in this beautiful photo. Great sharpness and details. The insect is a nice bonus.

Peter

Hello Ivan. Excellent capture hand hold with 420mmFL and at a distance of 4m. The fly and the beautiful flower are sharp and well exposed under pleasant lighting. I like the perspective and the well controlled depth in keeping the pleasant contrasting background silenced. Thanks for sharing and best regards. Jusni
