[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Yesterday it was cloudy with sunny intervals. We took the dog for walk with our cameras in case there was an opportunity.

During a sunny spell a small patch of bright orangey red shone in the grass. It was much brighter than a flower: it was of course a male Scarce Copper ( Lycaena virgaureae), freshly emerged in all his blazing glory.

He closed his wings when the sun went behind a cloud but I had enough time to take this and luckily it was Ulla’s turn to hold Putte’s lead.

The Scarce Copper was so-called because an English C18th butterfly collector claimed to have found it in England but it was very rare. It had later transpired that he had caught the specimen on the Continent and that it is not at all found in the British Isles. It had got its English name based on fraud!

It is in fact relatively common in Scandinavia up to the Arctic Circle and widespread from E. France eastwards over much of Europe. The larval host plants are various species of Rumex and the adults fly during most of July and August. The female is less bright and is more spotted and marked with brown.

It is worth remembering that the bright orange is not due to pigment but due to the structure of the scales reflecting the red/orange parts of the spectrum and the colours change slightly according the angle of viewing. The same applies to Lycaenid blue butterflies. Older specimens look duller owing to the loss of scales and the wearing of each scale during flight altering the reflection ability.

This was taken at a distance of about two meters (6.5ft) with the camera hand-held. After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was selectively sharpened.

Hello Ivan
It seems we were both out dog walking and captured Butterflys!!
This is a superb capture of the male Scarce Copper..Your Combination of the 300mm and convertor has produced fantastic sharp details especially as the wings are in an almost bowl like pose.
Best Regards
Paul

Also many Thanks for your warm words and adding my Juvenile Blackbird to your favourites.

Hi Ivan,

I love it! The butterfly and the story. So, if not for Putte this would be Ulla's shot - I'm laughing. Seriously, the pose on the blade of grass, the vivid colors, and the sharp details are all superb.

merhaba Ivan,
today I received two great messages from you. many thanks for your kind words and especially very nice to hear from you.
This is great macro-shot for Lycaena virgaureae with great focus, POV, superb colors and composition. In last year, I was seeing many Lycaena in red colors. But in this year, they are rare. I have seen only several ones and mostly from Northern Cyprus.
Also nice to see this beautiful species from your objective. Thanks for sharing it with good information. Best wishes my friend
Ahmet

Hello Ivan,

Hi Ivan
Splendid shot with crystal clear detail and stunning vivid color
tfs jon

The orange of the wings of this Scarce Copper is dazzling, Ivan. Interesting story about the misnomer.
Brilliant image, both technically and aesthetically.
I caught some Plains Cupid Blues with the wings open recently but the colour is not all that bright blue.
Thanks and regards.
Ram

Supern shot, Ivan! The fine details are so prominent! And the pose is very different, your frame also creates the right balance in the subject and its environment.
Very well done!

Hello Ivan,This is just good take. The details and lighting are perfect. Great shot. Ganesh

hello Ivan

WOW ! first what a beautiful butterfly with the vivid colour tones
and the black outlines, very fine POV, superb DOF,
beautiful luminosity and colour tones of the composition,
excellent sharpness and details of the butterfly,

i already wrote you, in my biggining in TN i wasn't
a butterfly photo fan, i became it little by little,
but still my primary subject are the birds and wild animals
it is why i don't have a theme (for favorite photo) on butterflies,
but if i had it one, this would be the first image of that theme,

TFS alot for this fine nature image

Hi Ivan,

The close-up of the Scarge Copper is showing the details and colors of the butterfly which are clear and sharp. The orange color is an eye catcher. The light has a good effect on the colors. The subject is well frame. Have a nice day.
