Wild Rabbit - Oryctolagus cuniculus

This is a little clearing in the woods next to us that’ll soon be gone to make way for yet another modern house! But so far it is the home of this Rabbit.

I often take my camera when I take Putte, our little dog, for a walk but normally he frigthens the Rabbits away. On this occasion, however, a black/white cat had positioned itself just by the entrances to the warren and this mother Rabbit was obviously waiting for the cat to leave as there were no doubt lots of little ones down in the holes! Even though Putte was very close indeed, both the cat and the rabbit stayed put!! I liked the way mother Rabbit patiently waited here in the sun so I got my camera out and I’m now quite pleased to have a record of this event and this place. It’s not as if there is a shortage of rabbits here – there are masses of young ones scooting about and I have tried to capture the young ones too, but so far I’ve only got the white tail end of them!

This was captured from a distance of about 10 metres with my G7 handheld. It has been cropped slightly and sharpened. I could have closed in on the Rabbit in PP but have chosen to leave the tree trunks as a frame.

Hi Ulla

Very appealing light in this one. I like the way you have captured the habitat within the frame as well. It must be a great time to be out in the woods in your part of the world!

Thanks for sharing
Cheers
Ravi

Hi Ulla!

Good shot of this common animal in natural environment. I like slightly chaotic BG - it looks very natural. Light is great. By the way - last weekend I heard something which sounds like loud fight of big dogs in Botanic Garden. Surprisingly I saw two fighting rabbits :-)

Hello Ulla,
lovely close-up shot of your beautiful Rabbit, excellent low POV,
excellent sharpness and details,
Best regards Siggi

Plausible idea to leave the trees intact, Ulla.
They certainly frame the cutie and lend depth to the view of the place.
The story of shooting this picture makes it an action shot and articulates your compassion for these innocent creatures of nature.
Thanks for sharing it and warm regards.

Super use of back lighting Ulla! And then a natural frame of trees tops it all off. It is almost a spring shot but there is yet a warmth to the sun. Well done Ma'am!

Hi Ulla,

I'm glad you didn't crop this shot - the trees frame the rabbit so well and the setting is so natural. We get a fine view of the rabbit and your notes explained the situation so well. It's so wonderful how protective these animals are of their babies but they seem to be very young and vulnerable when they are left on their own.

Jane

Hi Ulla,
Not easy to capture rabbits and specially in the sun. They prefer to stay in the shadow. The sweet sun on the grasses, the two trees well placed and the third on the foreground and Ms. Rabbit well placed make a lovely composition. TFS,
Catherine

Hi Ulla. Firstly what a shame such a beautiful area like this is going to be made into more buildings. You have used the light so well in this one it makes the long ears show up. great detai land colours. make the most of the area while its still there. TFS.

You are right about trees as a frame, the image is more naturally composed with this ambience. The rabbit waiting for developments is very curious...
