[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I have been very pleased with my Canon 400D and 420mm telephoto combination and I have managed to take both telephoto and telemacro shots. However as time went on I have been frustrated by not being able to take landscapes and macros of smaller insects.

Normally the solution would be to have a Wide-angle together with a macro lens. However this means either having three cameras or changing lens each time the need arises. Lens changing not only takes time allowing the subject to disappear if it can fly or walk, or lugging heavy equipment around and taking the time to take the suitable camera out. Not only that, lens changing makes the sensor vulnerable to dust.

No, as I want to stick to my my 420mm combination and want to keep my equipment relatively light and easily reachable, a good light compact might fill the gaps.

I took this shot of a Hoverfly (Syrphus vitripennis) as a test shot. It had settled on Hosta flowers.
It would be interesting to know what you think. It was taken at a distance of about 20cm with the camera hand-held

This species is common in most of Europe.

Hi Ivan.
How well I understand your desire. I think about this too. And my heartfelt congratulations to you with this new excellent assistant.

I am sure the camera is great for some tasks and you have proved it perfectly. Great close-up of top quality. Details, sharpness and clearness of the colours are superb as well as the subject is amazing. Bravo.
Alexei.

Hi Ivan,
in terms of image quality, it's pretty impressive it has to be said! Which camera is it, may i ask? Colours, clarity, detail and sharpness are all very good.
Personally i would never stray away from my 10-20mm for landscapes, as it allows me to get as much detail and information of the scene in as possible. I normally go out to shoot with something in mind, with the right lens already fitted for the job and a second one close to hand should i spot something of interest. I guess it's a matter of personal preference at the end of the day, but i think this shot here is good enough...do you??
Hope you come to the right decision,
Paul

Extremely impressive with such a small sensor. My wife is looking for a macro setup. Maybe this might be an alternative for her? Please keep me posted on your further eperiences!

Here you have virtually no noise, great sharpness, colours and DOF. Amazing for such a small sensor. I was quite disappointed by the S3.
Best regards/Bengt

You have to ask? Ha! It's super. Cannot imagine how much clearer one could expect? That's a fine combination and perhaps even one of your latest best shots Ivan.

Hello Ivan,
You call this a test shot. I call this a great shot.
I read your pro and con DSLR argumentation. I was a bit surprised to view such a quality image through a Powershot.
For instance I do like the highlights in the image. And noiseless. Wonder if you used Neatimage software...?
Well done
TFS

Ola Ivan
Boafoto com bons detalhes e cores bem definidas, a nitidez esta muito boa e a luminosidade excelente, a macro ficou perfeita.

Hi Ivan,

I have always been impressed with Ulla's G7 and if I were to get another camera it would be the G9. Of course I would never get a shot as amazing as this one of the Hoverfly. Colors are wonderful - sharp sharp details - wonderful sparkle on the wings and petals. I imagine the camera passed your test.

Jane

Test super! Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

Hi Ivan

Superb detail and exposure - I think I had better get one (I usually come back from a holiday with a bad back)! The focus and exposure here are great. Is the fly on hosta flowers?

James

Wouwwwww... Ivan my dear friend!
I do not think so taht you need any testing to take such perfect and glorious macro my friend! You are already an expert in both photography and wild life knowledge. 1st number shot as always!
TFS and warm regards,

Bayram

Good advert for the Canon PowerShot G9 Ivan. I have seen excellent shots with Canon 30d, etc with Kenko extension tubes.
But I understand what you mean, as I find just changing the lens a problem, without adding the extensions.
This is very good - very sharp and clear - I wouldn't mind it myself!!
Go for it
Janice

Hi Ivan. This close up has amazing detail and you have use the light so well giving the wings a shine. very rich colours but still natural. good exposure on the white flower. well done TFS.
Nick..
Have a nice weekend.

Hi Ivan,
After reading your notes I would say that the powershot is the answer for you. If changing out lenses and/or carrying the extra weight is not for you, the G9 is the perfect solution..I'm listing the 400D on Ebay this weekend, haven't used it much..and with a quality point & shoot, I'd be more apt to always have a camera with me wherever I go..I've missed opportunities because I left all the gear behind on short trips..Too much hassle.
Excellent hoverfly BTW :)
Have a great weekend,
Howard

I agree with you, Ivan. For someone like me, lugging all those lenses is absolutly out of question!
but why do you fault this shot? The G9's done an awesome job with you! This is as good as it could get with any other lens! What say you?
