Eriothrix rufomaculata

Ivan spotted this fly when we walked through a clearing in the woods near the coast the other day. It was overcast and the light was poor and he couldn’t get a good capture with his lens so I went over to him and got a couple of decent captures.

It is a parasitic fly that belongs to the Tachinidae family. It is black and bristly, 7-9 mm, with prominent orange patches on the sides of its abdomen. The spots are separated by a dorsal black line. The larvae develop inside the larvae of moths.

Adults are flower-feeders, visiting in particular members of the Umbelliferae and Asteraceae in grassy areas. Here it has settled on Valerian.

It is a common species in most parts of Sweden during the height of summer although we’ve never seen it before.

This was captured from a distance of about ½ metre with the camera handheld. It has been cropped and sharpened. 50% NeatImage on background.

Buen enfoque y encuadre de esta bella mosca. Muy buena luz. Elegancia del conjunto.
Saludos Ulla: Josep Ignasi.

An interesting contrast in shooting styles between you and Ivan. Whereas he chose with the combination of lens and adapter, to go in for a tight shot and hence has lar4ger areas without pattern...you have pulled out a bit and included some different patterns in the flower which now have become a part of the image. Two styles; both good. Each has it's own set of visual enhancements and both are positive. Nice that you both posted simialr images for this kind of comparison.

Hello Ulla,

Beautiful close-up of this hairy fly. I like your style. I find (but that is my opinion) that of the subject also what visible must be of its environment.

Thanks for sharing. Greetings and TFS BOB

Sorry for my absence! I see I have a LOT of catching up to do before I can post anything new.
I love the delicate details in this creature - you have managed to make the ugly more beautiful! Superb bokeh to really set this baby off!

Hello Ulla!

Interesting fly. Looks good with orange spots and long spikes on its body. Interesting note, I don't know why exactly, but I like parasites :-) Of course not human ones :-)

Dear Ulla!
This is a very sharp and clear picture of so small fly species! Bravo also for ID - I am not an expert in Diptera, but I know that is is difficult to identify great part of Tachinidae.
Best regards and be sure that soon I will come back to your pictures and gallery :)
Friendly yours,
Radek

Hi Ulla, another perfectly focused and detailed close-up capture of a fly on these beautiful flowers.

Hello Ulla,

For poor light, this is an excellent shot!
The details and sharpness are first rate.

I really like the attitude of the fly; it is very relaxed! With its legs hanging down the sides of the flower, it reminds me of people relaxing on a lilo on a pool!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)
