Wild Strawberry – Fragaria vesca

No fly this time, but a most delicious berry that I wish you all had a chance to taste. We miss tropical fruits in Sweden but instead we have many delicious wild berries and this one is my favourite. As children we used to pick them in dry meadows and thread them on to a long dry grass stem. At home we used to eat them together with Bilberries, sugar and cream. Here around Ahus they grow in sunny glades in the Pine woods.

It is a short perennial with long runners, rooting at intervals which means you often find them growing together in large patches. The flowers are white (see Workshop)on short stems. The berries are much smaller than Strawberries and covered all over by seeds and with the sepals bent back.

Carl Linnaeus suffered from gout. He was also very fond of wild strawberries. So fond, indeed, that he was partial to an 'ample bowl' of the fruit both morning and evening when his gout was really plaguing him. It has been tempting to make fun of the King of the Flowers - wild strawberries against gout, what next! - yet in fact recent research could well prove him right. Strawberries are very rich in antioxidants and richer in vitamin C than lemons and oranges.

Wild Strawberries are also used in the making of wines and liqueurs. They are found all over Sweden except
in mountainous areas.

Many of you may remember ‘Wild Strawberries’ as the title of a film by the great Swedish film producer Ingmar Bergman who died last year.

Hi Ulla,

I think we are neighbors for the very first time! The strawberries look yummy. We had strawberry fields in NJ where we could pick them and other berries growing wild. I miss that. This pair is beautiful - so red and tempting. I've never seen them growing wild. I love the composition.

merhaba Ulla
two in center missing, where were they? [It is only joke]. when I was a child the wild strawberries common edge of hazelnut garden. Like manythings, after using artificial manure and pesticids, they disappeared. After your great shot, with superb coloration, great POV and focus and nicely composed, I remember my childhood period again. Many thanks.
best regards

Hi Ulla

Lovely macro with sharp focus and vibrant colour. Well seen and captured.

Funny and unusual. found all over but not in mountain areas of your country...the one your living in I mean...but in the wilderness they only grow up in the mountains...and there are so precious few of them....tiny little things. We also used the leaves in our tea. For question answer they did not taste like strawberry but added a special medicinal touch which was important for that tea...it was

Two Stalks Yarrow Leaves
10 strawberry leaves
1 small Mullein Leaf
3 wild mint leaves
2 tablespoons of organic honey

All of this into a Mason jar 1 quart US
Put on the wood cookstove where it only gets barely warm enough to make the tea drinkable and let it sit for 2-3 hours....and then in summer of course... (*yes we had AM summer morning fires)...put it into a thermos and then in the cold box in the creek until late afternoon. At that time we took it with us wherever we went for the next day . Each person gets their own quart jar and it will last 1 day or 2 days depending...

With those lovely long stems, they look quite elegant! WE have two varieties here: one very close to the ground and more flavourful and the other tall like this!
Excellent colours, fine light handling and perfect details and composition

Hello Ulla,
a very sharp and clear photo of the strawberries. It is really appetizing with the vivid red and shiny fruits. Here we dont enjoy fresh straberries like you do.
Lovely colours and great composition that balances.

Foozi
