I came across this pretty looking Dwarf Willow Salix herbaceae the other day. But the delicious-looking berries are not to be eaten !! They are abnormal outgrowths caused by a parasite!

This is presumably caused by a mite of the family Eriophyidae that has more than 200 genera of mites, which live as plant parasites, commonly causing galls or other damage to the plant tissues and hence known as gall mites. About 3,600 species have been described, but this is probably less than 10% of the actual number existing in this poorly-researched family. They are tiny, microscopic mites and are yellow to pinkish white to purplish in color. The mites are worm like, and have only two pairs of legs. Their primary method of population spread is by wind. They affect a wide range of plants, and several are major pest species causing substantial economic damage to crops.

Insect galls develop under the influence of gall-inducing insects. Insect galls are usually induced by the chemicals injected by the larvae or the adults in the plants, either including mechanical damage or not. After the galls are formed, the larvae develop inside until fully grown, at which time they leave, sometimes as adults. In order to form galls, the insects must seize the time when plant cell division occurs at a high speed, the growing season, usually spring in temperate climates, but which can be extended in tropical latitudes. Also, the specific places where plant cell division occurs are needed to induce galls, that is, the meristems.

Although insect galls can be found on a variety of parts of the plant, such as the leaves, stalks, branches, buds, roots or even flowers and fruits, gall-inducing insects are usually species-specific and sometimes tissue-specific on the plants they gall. Some insects induce galls on plants similar to each other, frequently within genera or family.
Gall-inducing insects include gall wasps, gall midges, aphids, and psyllids.” Extract from Wikipedia

Dear Ulla,

Lovely indeed. I've ever seen such lovely insect galls...

It would have instructive to indicate the size of those "apples".

TFS,

Ishi

Hello Ulla. Looking really nice and tempting indeed until I read the useful notes. Excellent capture with very good control of the meter under well lit situation. I like the muted background which makes this shot so pleasing to see. Thanks for sharing and best regards. Jusni

Hi Ulla . At first i thought you were posting a apple tree from the small picture untill i read your notes . Amazing detail in the Gall. Very good natural colours and with a shine from the light. and fine detail. very well done TFS.
Nick..

You and Ivan have a nice weekend.

Hello Ulla,

Your notes were very interesting and the information they contained, quite new to me!

I thought they were small apples from the thumbnail so it was quite a shock when I found out what, in fact, they were!

The colours and details are excellent and I do like your composition with the upright twig, leading to a fine diagonal bearing the galls.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Ulla,

Hard to believe these are formed by parasites! They look so inviting. A beautiful shot of the fruit and leaves with such natural colors. Details, background and composition are all lovely.
