Holly Blue – Celastrina argiolus

This was a recent surprise visitor to our garden where it settled on the buds of Buddleia. In Sweden it is otherwise a common species in habitats with bushes and trees. The uppersides of the wings of this female are light blue with a broad black margin while the male is blue with a thin black outer margin to the wings. (See WORKSHOP) It often flies high above the ground and seldom settles on flowers. The larvae feed on Euonymus europaea, Hedera helix and Vaccinicum sp. It is one of the first Blue butterflies to appear in spring while this one belongs to the second generation that flies during July-August.

This was captured from a distance of about 30 cm with the camera handheld. It has been cropped and sharpened.

Hello Ulla,

What a nice composition in your photo with the curved plant and the butterfly on it! There are very interesting color tones in your photo and the graysh butterfly captures viewer sight.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Hi Ulla

Excellent shot. A beautiful butterfly on the butterfly bush, great stuff. I must plant one of these in my garden and see if it has the same effect in Australia. I like the suffused blue through the wings and body.
Excellent sharpness and composition
The G7 produces superb pictures
Great POV, DOF and background

Nicely composed, excellent depth of view and sharpness. Maybe a little bit too dark. Gary

Hi Ulla . We are having a heat wave at the moment so after a day in the garden i shall be of and taking picture from first light on sunday i just hope the weather last. This is a fine close up of the Holy Blue a nice side view showing the markings well with good detail and natural colours. well done TFS.
Nick..

Hello Ulla,
I think that blue butterfly on the photo exhibit often low intensity and don't delight.
I also took shot this species and it showed too pale. Good sharpness and BG.
Regards, Pawel

Very nice work and use of the workshop. It gives a total lasting impression that way. Your eyes are still good Ulla. You are a blessing to nature and that indeed is where your heart is as well as Ivan!
Bob

merhaba Ulla
In first half of July, I saw this species several times. It is really very beautiful. your macro capture also great. Great sharp details, POV and composition. Blue and green nicely contrasting each other. good notes and WS. thanks. best regards

Ciao Ulla,
bellissima composizione per questa piccola farfalla, di cui è difficile trovare una corretta esposizione, mi piace molto la sottoesposizione che rende dei colori molto belli e saturi, ottima nitidezza.
Grazie e complimenmti
Maurizio

Hi Ulla,

You have so many beautiful butterflies, trees, and flowers! I'm lucky if I see at least one butterfly in a week. This Holly Blue looks so pretty and delicate. I can see from the workshop how it must appear white while flying. A lovely composition on the pretty curved branch.

Jane

Very fine capture from a close distance, Ulla.
Together with the ornate shape of the plant it is settled on, the butterfly looks very attractive.
Best regards,
Ram

Hi Ulla,
nice presentation, good details and composition. I like it. Pity that scene was in shade.

Hello Ulla,

Very well captured details of this silvery butterfly. I do like how you have used the twig to enhance your composition!

I have planted a buddleia this year. It is not open yet but I am waiting for it to attract hundreds of butterflies!!!

Kinfd regards,
Bev :-)
