I’ve called this a ’happy moment’ as it is one of very few dragonflies I’ve seen in the garden this summer while last summer they were plentyful. I also think he’s got a nice smile on his face!

This is most likely a Sympetrum striolatum. It is hard to tell from this POV and it has not yet fully developed its colours. We’ve certainly enjoyed the blue sky this summer but it has now virtually come to an end and there are few butterflies and insects around. Time for birdwatching soon!!!

This was taken from a distance of about 30 cm holding the camera up high. It has been cropped and sharpened.

Wow what an angle...so dramatic. It gives slight even in perched! A sharpening didn't hurt it at all but brought out the prickly situation:-) I'm not sure if I have ever seen one caught in this pose with the deep blue sky as a backdrop. Very unique!

Hi Ulla,

A happy moment indeed! Just wonderful with that blue sky in the background. The pose is magnificent and he seems to be enjoying himself. Excellent colors and details of the dragonfly - the face is superb. I love those wings filling the frame.

Hello Ulla,

Excellent POV. Beautiful composition. Very good sharpness on the whole body of the dragonfly. I have been chasing a red dragonfly, I think to be a Sympetrum sanguineum, for a week without success, this insect is very shy, yours does not seem so shy. Splendid light and colours.
Cheers,
Mariki

Ciao Ulla,
splendida macro di libellula, eccellenti POV dal basso, DOF e composizione con lo sfondo del cielo e la posa su questa bella piamta, superlativi i dettagli, magnifici i colori.

I love the angle that you took this photo... very impressive. Wings are extremely sharp and the lacey pattern of the wings contrast so nicely with the sharp looking plant. Really well done...

Hi Ulla,

Hello Ulla!
Really this one has smile on its face :)
Very interesting and original POV, I like contrast between insect and blue sky.
On the other hand some noise reduction would be good I think, especially in "sky part" of picture :)
Best regards from Lodz!
Friendly yours,
Radek

Hi Ulla!

POV is really good! Dragonfly looks like very happy indeed :-) Very interesting composition with silhouette of insect well visible on blue sky. Agree with your ID also. Good, refreshing work!

Hello Ulla,
Very unusual POV. Excellent composition and nice colours too. An happy summer shot. Yes, this summer was not very good also in Belgium for butterflies and dragonflies. To much rainy and covered days I think. I hope the autumn will be better. Best regards,
Catherine

Hello Ulla! Well done on that great macro! I love the pov and great details, good work as always!

Mario

Goodness... I don't know how you manage to get so close to these guys. It is a wonderful full frame image. I bet there was a smile on both your faces. : )

On my monitor it looks just a little over-sharpened, but the color and exposure look good.
Our summer seems to have ended abruptly with a winter storm pattern.

Taking a dragonfly picture from such a perspective is a difficult proposition, Ulla. I try to avoid it as far as possible because my camera settings tend to go wrong.
On the contrary, you have done it wonderfully well. 1/640 gives you perfect details on the subject and also gets the sky as if you had used a polarized filter.
A brilliant picture, indeed.
Namaste and regards.

Hello Ulla, Brilliant angle and superb view. I am sure you might have delighted after seeing such an angle to shoot. Such an angle many times are short lived as by the time you adjust the camera and the settings, phew the fly gone. you were lucky to get such a view and presented it beautifully. Ganesh

Hello Ulla,
What an amazing point of view! We can see the sky through the wings. Gives an original and well composed picture. In my area here in Bern there are a lot less dragonflies than usual too.Do you know what kind of plant the dragonfly rests?
Thanks and best regards
Anne

Hi Ulla;)
Like my love to herptiles;) your love to dragonflies is prominent in this shot! Perfectly focused and composed macro in all around my friend!
