Longhorn Beetle Stenurella melanura and
Common black garden ant Lasius niger

This is the second image of this female Longhorn Beetle that I’m now posting. I rather like its company of the little Ant. I found them together on the Coriander flowers.

The beetle is between 6-10 mm in length. The elytra (wing cases) are black and red in females while the elytra on males are yellowish brown. The larvae live in the wood of old rotten branches and twigs lyting on the ground. They pupate after 2-3 years in early June and the adults appear a few weeks later.

The Ant, 3-5mm, is common in gardens where it builds its nest under tufts of grass or under stones. You often see them running up and down on the trunks of fruit trees where they milk the aphids for honeydew. The ants will also eat ripe fruits, and love our peaches!! Every colony has one queen. The one above is a worker.

This was captured with the camera handheld from a distance of ½ metre. It has been cropped and sharpened.

Hola Ulla, buen macro, con premio, dos insectos perfectamente enfocados.
Buena exposición y tonos de color naturales y muy ag4radabñes. Un saludo

Hi Ulla.
Superb of quality and attractiveness of subject picture. Exposure and petals reproduction are spot on. Details of all pictured objects (cute insects and fine flowers) are stunning. Colours, as usual, are wonderful – clean and rich. I wish to use so short exposure time at macro shooting always. However, I have not camera with noiseless ISO 12800. My best regards.
Alexei.

Hello Ulla,
Very natural and pleasant shot of Coriander-flower with two insects.I especially like the composition and the fine colours of this picture. This Longhorn beetle is also very present in my region. Thanks also for your information on the beautiful shrub Kolkwitzia amabilis.
Bon dimanche
Anne

Hi Ulla,
A nice capture of these duo. Very well composed with sharp details. Thanks a lot for sharing.

That coriander is quite the attractant Ulla...It brings you many small and delightful insects...You may just be getting me onto an idea now...I do tend to over look the smaller insects on flora...and perhaps it is because I cannot pick out or do not have a discerning eye as you do...maybe it is a sign that I should slow down a bit in my walks! Very good lesson in a round about way!
Bob

Hi Ulla,

The insects seem to like your pretty flowers as much as I do! The flower alone would have worked for me but the beetle and ant are wonderful bonuses. Beautiful as always with wonderful colors, fine details, and a superb composition.

Hello Ulla!

You really mastered your Canon! Fantastic macro with longhorn beetle, ant and flower. I like composition very much, especially three blurred, green stalks of grass on BG.

3 beauties Ulla. Your camera certainly takes good macro shots.
The image is so crisp and sharp, and the insects show up really well on the flower.
Well done
Janice

Hello Ulla. I just like the lively image from your new gadget. The color is so vivid and the sharpness and detail are just brilliant. This is one beautiful double shot framing them well on that gorgeous looking flower. Well worked with the metering in keeping the depth shallow making the image really pops. Thanks for sharing and well done. Jusni

WOW!Ulla,
A lovely, as a matter of fact, perfect shot, the POV you've chosen for this macro is superb!
Very well done, my friend!
Cheers!
Goldy

Very delicate and artistic image, Ulla. There is a veritable cohesive unity of all the elements in this image. Everything is in place -- composition, colours, position of insects on the flower.
The neat plain BG serves well in making this image a feast for the eyes.
Thanks and regards.

Hello Ulla,

What a nice photo you have done. I like very much the delicat color tones you have obtained by using so well the mild light. Image is very sharp showing well insects and flower in the same time. The delicate gray background enhaces the feeling of sharpness of the main subject.

Congratulations,
Cristian

Hello Ulla,

Lovely picture of these two insects on a beautiful flower. Very good exposure and focus. Excellent sharpness. Superb colours. I posted another picture in WS with my picture of the last syrphid fly merodon equestris where I show also an ant going along with the fly. The only thing is that I was not aware of the presence of the ant when taking the picture, I was too focused on the fly.

Cheers,
Mariki
