[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
It is usually not easy to photograph the Orange Tip as it is so active and difficult to approach. So I was amazed to see three males 'attacking' what looked like a white flower. The white flower soon soon showed itself to be a freshly emerged female on one of her larval host plants, Garlic Mustard (Alliaria petiolata).

The freshly emerged female secretes female pheromones that stimulate passing male to mate with her. This shot shows two males competing. Even after one of the males succeed in connecting up to the female the pheromone is so strong that other males will continue to try copulate.

The WORKSHOP shows the successful male in cop. after the pheromone has dispersed. The pair look well camouflaged, the pattern of the undersides of the wings looking like the flowers of the Garlic Mustard.

During this pairing frenzy I took several shots, at one time involving three males, but this shot with two males turned out to be the best.

After only a little cropping this image was sharpened a little after size reduction.

Hello Ivan,
well discovered, observed and captured. I think it's difficult to decide here on which of the players to set the focus and to select the most suitable point of view.
We see that you managed the situation well and obtained a nice picture of the scene.
Wonderful Nature Document.
Best wishes, Peter

What a "frenzy" you have recorded here, Ivan!
The three of these Orange Tips enmeshed together make a sort of abstract formation that just delights!

An amazingly beautiful capture. The composition formed by the two males creates the illusion of a giant butterfly with three orange tips!!.
Bravo!

I see them now - the orange tips are only on one side of the wings. And it isn't a flower - it's the female butterfly. Oh well, she can't complain about the fighting - she asked for it:)))
You have good notes Ivan, and though not an overly sharp clear photo, you have shown us a very interesting event,
THANK YOU
Janice

Congratulation for your capture of this unique moment... even if the first photo is a bit on the daring side.... ;o)

The DOF is amazing considering that you used aperture 5.6.
The workshop really adds to this posting and I think it is a very creative idea to use workshops for this purpose.

j'etais passé a coté de cette scene de menage ou alors une orgie a trois!
