[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This morning we went to a nature reserve consisting of sandy heathland and pines.

These pines were planted during the nineteenth century to prevent the sand eroding away. Apart from Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris), a low-growing species from the Balkans and central Europe, the Mountain Pine, was planted as a soil binder.

This small species of pine (Pinus mugo), in Swedish Bergtall, has cones that provide excellent food for various species of birds that we came to photograph.

This is a male Common crossbill (Loxia curvirostra) that has used his powerful scissor beak to cut off a tender cone. He flew away with it to pick it apart and eat the soft bits in the centre, the cone not being ripe enough to have produced seeds that Tits and finches eat.

This image was cropped by about 30% as this crossbill was only about 6 meters away. The high shutter-speed was due to the strong sidelight that also created deep shadows and I had to have ISO 400 in case I photographed in the shade, when the speed dropped down to 250th. Little sharpening was required after size reduction.

This is an amazing photo, Ivan. I only see them a couple of times each year and then mostly from long distance. This is a real closeup and I am interested to know how you managed to get this close.

Perfect colours and lightning and I like the pose very much!

Hi Ivan,
a special shot! Capturing this bird with a seed pod in its mouth is excellent. Sadly the only time I've seen one of these was dead one while on holiday in Italy :( I'm glad this one is happy though :)
+++ Excellent sharpness and detail especially in the feathers. Great contrast between the dull sky and vivid colours of the Crossbill. Decent composition and POV.
Very well done,
Joe

Very nice portrait of this male of "piquituerto", too great moment with food in the beek.
Cheers

Hello Ivan,
This is a beautiful capture of Common Crosssbill, a species unfamiliar to me.the focus is spot on. Good sharpness and details.Lovely blue sky aginst which the bird stand out very well. The beak of the bird does look very powerful.Nice moment captured with the corn in it's beak and the bird in natural surroundings.
Thanks for the share,
Smitha.

Hello Ivan,
A very attractive composition, showing this proud bird and his catch!
DOF spot on with great details in the plumage, and the autumn sky works nicely as background...
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hello Ivan,
brilliantly clear, smoothly coloured portrait of the crossbill in a very charming pose, in superb light.
Artistically well arranged composition. A masterpiece of capture and presentation. Thank you!
With best regards,
Peter

Hello Ivan,

This is an excellent capture of bird I've only seen in pictures. The long focal range allowed you to reach to it and get this splendid profile with the cone in the beak. The blue sky is a perfect background and isolates the subject nicely. The blurred branches in the foreground convey the impression that we see the bird from a hide. The noise created by the ISO 400 setting is so low that I barely noticed it. Exposure was well controlled in spite of the strong sidelight keeping harsh shadows to a minimum. A real wildlife picture of a species we don't see very often here on TN! Thank you!

With Friendly Regards,
Eddie
