[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is the Scandinavian, nominate race of the Willow Tit (Parus montanus montanus). The British race, kleinschmidti, has brownish instead of greyish tones in the plumage. The Swedish name is Talltita, which means Pine Tit.

Indeed this species is confined to coniferous forests in Scandinavia. Its close relative, the Marsh Tit, keeps to damp areas where birches and willows grow. In Sweden the Willow Tit can be told from the Marsh by the larger black bib, the greyer tone to the plumage, as well as the less broad black cap.

The English name 'Tit' is an abbreviation of 'Titmouse'. Though it looks like a N. American Chickadee, a name taken after the sound it makes, this does not make a 'chickadee' sound at all.

Instead it is often heard, before it can be spotted, by its drawn out 'teh...teh' sounds and that is how I knew of its presence before I could photograph it in this nature reserve with its mountain pines, the cones of which are so atractive to Crossbills and various species of Tits.

This species is more common north of Scania. But its numbers have declined drastically owing to intensive modern forestry that reduces the insect diversity drastically and nesting holes are scarce.

As we had a wet summer some of the pines became infected with a fungus desease, which accounts for the brown dead needles.

This was taken at a distance of about 4 meters with the camera hand-held. After only slight cropping and size reduction, the image was selectively sharpened a little. The sun shone in just the right direction.

A beautiful bird that really does resemble the chickadee. You have captured him perfectly with beautiful black and whites and lovely colors in the plant and background. Excellent details, wonderful pose, a lovely picture.

Hi Ivan, very nice presentation of this Willow Tit. Excellent detail seen on the bird with the feathers and that great eye. You've done a great job with the depth of field, but in this case I see that you've gone a step further, utilizing this with your composition to give a crowning effect with the conifer behind the bird. I'm going to assume of course that this was intentional. In any case it is a neat effect.
