[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
While we were looking for damsel and dragonflies by a small river we came across a colony of Red and Black-striped Shieldbugs (Graphosoma lineatum).

This species is not common in Sweden but is more plentiful in the south. It hibernates as an adult to emerge in the spring and several gather to form a colony usually on some species of Umbelliferous plant like Hedge Parsley.

Like many Shieldbugs it secretes an obnoxious substance which makes it unpalatable. Most shieldbugs tend to rely on camouflage but this species advertise its unpalatabilty by having warning colouration and it is considered an advantage to keep together so that a young bird quickly learns to recognise the shieldbug.

Though these two individuals are not exactly identical there is not visual difference between the sexes and it is open to speculation whether these two are of the opposite sex.

I am still experimenting with my telephoto combination and tried to hold the camera still with a relatively low shutter speed in order to increase the DOF.

This shot was taken at a distance of just over two meters and the image was cropped by about 30% and after size reduction it was slightly sharpened.

Hello Ivan,
very nice colours and light and a beautiful scene. I like the general composition of the picture. The result achieved considering the circumstances, conditions and the equipment used is remarkable, in particular with respect to the 2m-distance. On my trip to the Harz mountains last week, I took also some pictures of G. lineatum, some of them also with 2 specimens. I used a Macro lens and got very close to the insects. Perhaps, I will post a picture later.
Best wishes, Peter

hello ivan
belle capture de ces deux ( gendarme) bonnes couleurs , dommage qu'il y est un peu de brillant, mais photo parfaite
bien vu, merci

What a handsome pair, Ivan!
These Shieldbugs are truly good looking except that they exude the most foul smelling stuff when they are fiddled with! I have first hand experience of it with a species of it native to my place in the hills of India. Of course, it was during my younger days when one is more adventurous :-).
Well done and TFS.

Hi Ivan,

How wonderful to find a pair of these beetles side by side on a beautiful green leaf. Wonderful colors and details showing their striped pattern.

Jane

Dear Ivan!
This is a very good picture! I like:
-composition - two individuals of the some species looking in the some direction!

- DOF - very good, no other comment is needed :)

- colouratio - well saturated colours and good using of the flash

- note - as always there is something interesting and new!

- object - in Poland rather common (probably not so common in Sweden because of temperatures), but really good presented.

TFS and have a nice evening!
Radomir

Hello Ivan,
Very nice and odd pair to me, seems to be a common species in europe, I´ve commented some taken in several countries. This species looks like Milan fans to me... :)
Good job, friend
