[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Gulls show a marked difference between juveniles and adults. This makes identification difficult for aspiring bird watchers. What complicates matters more is that it takes three years or more to reach adult plumage and there are intermediate stages. This means that experts can tell the age of a juvenile gull by noting the appearance of the plumage.

This shot shows the difference between the adult Greater Black-backed Gull (Larus marinus) standing on the pier and a first-year juvenile that has taken off.

When this juvenile is over a year old he moults into lighter plumage, the head becoming a pale beige and the wings and body paler and the bill becomes paler with a black bar. The change continues until the fourth year when the bird moults into adult plumage and is thereby sexually mature.

In Sweden birds that develop in this way are classified according to their age: for example if we say a bird is a 2K bird, it means that it has reached its second calendar year.

Thus to describe these two birds we can say that the juvenile is a 1K and the adult a 4K +.

The Greater Black-backed Gull is a common species round the coasts of NW Europe and it breeds on inaccessible cliff ledges and small islands and skerries.

I took this image on a cloudy day with the camera hand-held. After cropping and size reduction it was selectively sharpened and shade reduced by 25%.

Hi Ivan.
I like sea and seagulls so much and I like your nice in-flight picture of this charming pair. Pictured scene and moment, timing and exposure, sharpness and details are spot on. I also like perfect composition and framing of the shot. Delicate colours and lighting create a pleasant impression. My best wishes and TFS. Well done.
Alexei.

Hello Ivan,

Very nice picture of these gulls. That is an image not unusual for me because I lived for a long time close to the sea. I go back there for Christmas, perhaps I will come back with pictures of gulls also.
Nice focus and natural colours.
Cheers,
Mariki

Hello Ivan,
incredibly interesting note to accompany this excellent photo.
I learn so much from reading your notes!
Superb shot of this adult and juvenile.
The stark difference between the two is amazing!
Very sharp and detailed.
Great pose from the juvenile.
I like the lighting and colours.
Great work.
Well done,
Joe

The difference between the juvenile and the adult gull is so marked, Ivan. This very sharp and clear shot of the flying adult and the stationary youngster brings out the difference very effectively here.
The grey BG also works very well in this lovely picture.
TFS and regards.

Hi Ivan

A very nice photo here and a great title for it!
Considering the cloudy conditions, you really took advantage of the minimal f-stop your lens gives you and you still managed to catch a great in-flight with a short shutter speed.
The presentation of these two types of plumage is excellent and your very good note completes the description well.
Good sharpness and nice colors, too.

Bravo and TFS

Hola Ivan,
bonita composición y bonita toma, el encuadre es muy buena gran foto.
saludos José

It might have been synchronicity had I not changed my daily at the last minute from a gull to a blackbird. Well that is fine..You do this one and Ill do mine and I'll meet you back here later:-)
A fine image..one not and one in flight. One younger and one older. One showing as you say, the lines and patterns which change as time goes on...a very nicely thought out note to accompany Ivan...Very nicely done for a Sunday treat!

Hi Ivan.I like pictures like this one that make us get inside the life of animals. We don't know what's happening there but the way the gull looks at the younger one, something is definitely happening. Great moment. I like the shot for the blue tones, the sharpness of both birds, the nice water background and the dock, where we can see the passage of time. Thank you!

Francine

Hi Ivan, lovely family composition that let us see the difference between adult and juvenile form, splendid composition with wonderful details and great sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

WOW!!!
What a magnificent capture and what a splendid and interesting note!!
Indeed there are so many differences between young and adult that I would have said they are different species of seagull.
Splendid shot with great sharpness, lighting and exposure and an excellent DOF and composition.
Congratulations and TFS

Hi Ivan,
exellent timing and great camera control too. The strip of wood up the right hand side adds some good depth and leads us nicely to the (parent?) Gull watching this youngster taking flight. A lovely natural moment caught here by you.

Hi Ivan, this is a superb catch of the youne Greater Blacked Gull. Your note is very informative as I have been photographing them this autumn and was a litte confused at the variety of plumage in the juveniles. Fantastic to catch both the young and adult in the same shot. The young gull shows magnificent detail in the markings in the plumage and your freeze frame actions shot has caught it perfectly. Very nice pov, good colours, great exposure and a fab composition.
