[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
A number of settling ponds once used by a now-demoshished sugar-beet factory now act as fine reserves for aquatic birds.

Among these are this pair of Red-necked Grebes (Podiceps grisegena) that have just arrived to establish a nesting territory.

They are about to start a courtship display by stretching their necks and then touching bills and move their heads from side to side in unison as if to mirror each other.

Unfortuntely as they continued they moved against the the light, so that the best shot I got was this one at the beginning of this pair-bonding display.

This species of grebe is fairly rare in Sweden and widespread in Eastern Europe. It overwinters in the Mediterranean and along the N. Atlantic Coasts. The nest is built of floating vegetable matter and both parents care for the young.

IMAGE INFORMATION:
Taken from a hide at a distance of about thirty meters.
ISO 200
Image heavily cropped.
After size reduction it was sharpened and treated for noise using Neat Image. My Photoshop 4 does not enable me to work with Neat Image direct, which removes the exif display.

Hi Ivan,
Excellent syncronisation shot. The blue water and its ripples give good effect to the reflections. Perfect natural lighting and good colours. Sharp details. Very nicely composed. Kudos.

Hello Ivan,
Excellent symmetry in this excellent composition with great colors and details.

Hi Ivan,
Lovely courtship figure. They have eye contact and talking to each other by way of synchronize moving. With two Red-necked Grebes and nothing around give high impact and setting the mood of love is in the air. Very well done and tfs.

Wow Ivan,
this is a picture I'd sure like to take. Most of the red necked grebe leave holland before they are in full summer dress. Only in the coastal region you can find them. But this display is great.
