[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This warbler, Acrocephalus arundinaceus, is the largest warbler in Europe. In fact in Sweden, where it is an uncommon summer visitor in the South, it is called Trastsångare: this means ‘thrush warbler’, as it is almost the size of a Song Thrush.

Like the Reed Warbler here it overwinters in tropical Africa.

Among the more common Reed Warblers it is easy to recognise by its much louder and varied song. Though I had difficulty in getting a clear view of it when I was trying to photograph it, it shows itself more often that its cousin, the Reed Warbler, sometimes choosing a place well up on a reed stem to defends its territory or attract a mate with its loud song.

This individual is one of the two that are recorded in this part of Scania. Having seen the report on the bird reporting system on the internet, I set off at 7.30 this morning and drove 15 km to the locality on the eastern shore of Lake Hammarsjon. After a 15 minute-walk I heard him before I saw him.

This was taken with the camera hand-held using manual focusing, the reeds making AF very difficult.

As it was impossible to come closer than 15 meters, this image was heavily cropped. After size reduction it was sharpened and the resulting noise had to be treated using Neat Image.

Isn't this the same fellow who hides among the reeds and pops out only occasionally? You showed us a picture of it a few days back, if I am not wrong.
In this shot too, the beauty of the subject is enhanced manifold by those vertical reeds it perches on. They contribute immensely to the composition as whole.
Well done and TFS.

Wonderful shot in natural setting Ivan.
Looks like the warbler is singing a song specially for you :)
Beautiful to see how the eye is peeping just around the edge of the reed.
Lovely light in the eye and soft BG color tones.
Thanks for sharing.
Best regards, Harry

Hello Ivan,
another very nice picture of this great reed warbler. The portrait composition looks great. The low light provides a nice exposure of the bird. I was surpised to read there are only very little great reed warbler in Scania.
I am curious in what conditions they breed in Scania. The Dutch population collapsed in the past three decades. In the 70's they occured in a wide variety of habitats. The few dutch breeders nowadays only occur only in 'old' reed beds. The question from nature conservers is whether this warbler can breed in other habitats as well.
Regards, Jacob

Hi Ivan.
Wow, he is singing his little heart out there for you. Beautiful image with the grasses he is hanging onto. Great DOF so he and the grasses stand out, perfect lighting and colour, catch light in the eye, all good.

The composition of this one is A1 ---the vertical lines and the division of the photo, and the singing of the little bird. Delightful photo!

Gran composición con delicados detalles y texturas. Buena pose del ave. Saludos Ivan.

A beautiful composition with beautiful colors, Ivan.
The vertical reeds and the clean BG create a very attractive photo. The bird seems to like being in the spotlight, singing his little heart out for an audience.
Great shot and TFS. : )

Hi Ivan,

I love singing birds and this Warbler is a beauty. The colors are wonderful - the red beak stands out. Beautiful details with the sparkle in the eye. Lovely setting and background. That is some position he is in holding onto the reeds.

I am posting this from the train from Stockholm to our home... ;o)

Amazing photo, Ivan! Interesting pose and a perfect POV. It is so hard to get this close to them so I am full of admiration! Also lovely subtle colours.

Mycket fin bild på sångaren i en trevlig miljö! TFS.

Hello Ivan!
Another intresting bird presentation. And a very good timing! I am really very bad ornithologist but I really know how difficult is to photograph this very mobile species. And moreover its life style does not allow to see it to often (even if its songs can be hear rather often).
Very nice composition, I like also BG and sharpness.
My best congratulations and best withes,
R.

Hi Ivan,
what a nice shot. great action. colors and background so nice. thanks
well done
Ahmet

Classic Reed Warbler pose Ivan...composition is nice too, not too many reeds to spoil it. Best, Brat.
