White Stork – Ciconia ciconia

Today I’ve chosen to post a Stork that I captured in a nearby wetlands before we went up north. I think he’s looking a bit embarrassed, just as I feel at the moment. We’ve had rather a hectic time lately and I just realized I’ve not thanked you for all the very kind and encouraging comments on my 400th post! THANK YOU VERY MUCH - It’s wonderful being part of this global family and I wish I had more time to write personal comments to everybody. Part of my trouble is that I have too many interests and I try to fit in some family research, gardening and painting as well as nature treks and photography! I really wish the days were longer!

The White stork was once abundant in Scania but during the 19th century they declined and at the beginning of the 20th century there were only about 40 pairs left. In 1955 they had become totally extinct. The major reason was drainage systems which destroyed their wetland habitats. In 1989 the Swedish White Stork project was initiated, aiming to restore wetlands on a large scale and to re-establish a White Stork population by the re-introduction of captive-bred birds.

Since 1993 there is an aviary for white storks in Kristianstad Wetlands by Lake Hammarsjön. Several storks have been let out, but like this one they have returned year after year to breed near the aviary.

This was captured from a distance of about 15 metres in bright light and with the camera handheld. It has been cropped and sharpened.

Hello Ulla
What a superb capture of this White Stork..Even though the light was bright you have exposed it perfectly with a very good balance between Highlights and Shadows.
Its always a juggling act to find enough hours in the day...To many interests and not enough time!!..I am exactly the same!!
Have a good Sunday

hi Ulla,

Great shot of the Stork.
I like the pose with the bird preening itself.
Nicely composed with a lovely natural BG.
Excellent details, colours and light too.

Hil

A superb capture of this White Stork and informative note.

It is at very least our obliged duty to encourage such talent as yourself Ulla! A fine image and just as good for the next number whether it be another 400 of simply 40. Each is special and unique coming from a person of experience and married luckily to a person who also share enjoyment!

Good shot of this White stork preening himself, Ulla. I love his red legs and knobbly knees. Also interesting to see he is banded - that means he is looked after...

Hello Ulla,
Beautiful photo of this Stork. Great colours in difficult light. Very sharp and an excellent POV. Nice composition and BG.
Regards,
Peter

A fine preening stork capture against the flattering reeds Ulla, we have a saying here, if you see a stork flying in the spring you will travel a lot that year, but if your first sight is a landed stork, you will stay at home!
Cheers,
Mehmet

Wonderful exposure. The white is so hard to capture. I always tend to over-expose. But you did a great job. Love the detail in the plumage. Good one!

Hello Ulla,

I think you shot this just at the right time! It looks so much more interesting when it is behaving in a natural way, as if no-one as about!
Lovely details and good composition.

Superb picture of the preening beauty, Ulla. It sure has given you a good pose.:) Good sharpness and details in the plumage.Very colourful bill and legs. It's good that you included its habitat too in the picture.

This stork appears to be bashful and there's something endearing about that. I love the POV and I think you captured it at the perfect moment - moments we live for! The turn of his head and his stance makes me almost hear him say 'aw, shucks' when at a loss for words...

The notes are also terrific, but there's no doubt, for this capture, your timing was perfect!

Hi Ulla,
Fantastic shot, awesome compo. Very little OE on a small part of the stork's body, and I'd have cropped a little more from the non-focused bottom, but these are minor problems. Very nice pic overall.
This specie isn't rare in Hungary, in the plains, used to build nest on pylons in the villages.
Tfs, best wishes, László

Hi Ulla, This is a most appealing photo of the stork. I find the pose and colours most engaging. The background is ideal. Congratulations. Murray.
