[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a male Silver-spotted Skipper (Hesperia comma).

The black stripe of scent scales, or sex band, tells us that this is a male. When he comes near another skipper his flight becomes more intensive with the wings vibrating to release these pheromone-loaded scales. If the other skipper is a female she reacts by flying up to him and they both whirr round each other to vanish into a courtship flight and begin to pair some distance away. Skippers can rapidly fly sideways and backwards as well.

In order to be this active it has to be over 20 Celsius (68 F). Here he is warming himself in the morning sunshine. They are fond of late summer flowers, especially thistles.

Until recently this species was known as the Common Skipper (Allmän Ängssmygare) in Swedish but as many butterfly names have been changed, including the removal of the word ’common’, it is now called Silversmygare, or ‘Silver Skipper’.

Indeed it is now much less common than it used to be, mainly because it requires well grazed meadows that have not been treated by pesticides and herbicides. Such habitats are becoming more and more restricted to nature reserves. This was taken in a nature reserve close to town.

The same applies to most of Europe where it is widespread but no longer common. It is absent from most of the UK, except S. England where it is very rare.

This was taken at a distance of about 1.8 meters (6 ft) while I was sitting on the ground with the camera hand-held. After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was selectively sharpened.

Hello Ivan,

Your photo has a very nice light and you used it well rendering delicate color tones that look so natural. Well chosen DOF showing in great detail the body of the butterfly as well as wings underside pattern.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Hola Ivan,
captura y macro magníficas,
pov y buen encuadre,
nitidez e iluminación estupendas.

Hej Ivan,

Very nice lighting on this skipper showing detail very well. It is a pity that we(humans) are destroying the areas that such beauty needs.

Hello Ivan. Interesting to see how these skippers are well adapted to different climate. Sharp shot exposing detail markings and I like the hairy hairstyle. Beautiful matted compound eye and isolated well against the silenced background. I like it and well done. Regards. Jusni

Hello Ivan, These skippers are quite recognisable to me now. Quite dainty, hairy creatures - big legs too. They are so hairy they make me think they could be moths. I don't see them in NZ.
Nicely captured here, he stands out really well on the plant

Hello Ivan,

Excellent capture of this skipper. Excellent POV, DOF and sharpness. Superb detail of the markings on the wing. Good light and natural colours. I cannot remember to have ever seen a skipper.
Cheers,
Mariki

Another skipper from Europe and Sub Asia eh? I have never seen one but when I looked at your notes I noticed the word hesperia and remembered it as a town in California where I visited once..so on this image I went to look up the meaning of the word..in Greek it meant "Evening land" or "Western land". that alone adds a mystic as to how and why this Skipper got its name. A fine presentation as well of course from the master of the insect and aviary world..
Bob

Hi Ivan,
A nice capture of this beautiful skipper. Very well composed shot with sharp details. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hello Ivan!
For the first view I believe that this is another, much more popular species, but now I see that I was wrong :)
Interesting creature very nice presented. As always the note is very informative.
All the best from Lodz,
Radomir

Hello Ivan,
Nice to see the same moth in Sweden I have seen a few days ago in my country. Interesting view showing under and upper-wings, where the comma is visible. Interesting note for which I would thank you.
Have a nice evening
Anne

Ivan this is a beautiful Silver-spotted Skipper that you present. Such nice composition, colors and details!
It is interesting that you have a butterfly called "Silver-spotted Skipper" in Sweden. We have one by same name in U.S.A. but it does not look anything like yours. Ours is Epargyreus clarus.
