Four-banded Longhorn Beetle (Leptura quadrifasciata)

Swedish name: Fyrbandad blombock, meaning ‘Four-banded Flower-longhorn.’

This is a longhorn beetle (Cerambycidae). In Scandinavia there are 128 species, all of which are dependent on either the wood or bark of trees where their larvae develop.

The larvae of this species develop in rotting hardwood, mostly that of birch and it is fairly common in most of Sweden but absent in the far north. It is widely distributed in the rest of Europe.

The adult beetles feed on pollen and nectar and traces of pollen can be seen on the antennae of this individual. The body is about 18mm long. This individual is on the flowers of Yarrow (Achillea millefolium), a composite plant that is a persistent weed but does attract a few insects.

This image was taken at a distance of about 1.8 meters (6 ft) with my long-lens camera hand-held. It was moderately cropped and after size reduction selectively sharpened.

Hi Ivan,

Even I can figure out how this beetle got his name :-) The insect looks wonderful on the very pretty flowers. It reminds me of Halloween with the nice orange and black. Fine details of the entire beetle. I love the composition.

Hello Ivan,

You photo has a very good composition with the diagonaly placed insect. Due to the high quality image insect can be well seen. All the body is in focus so that wings pattern can be well observed. The white flower makes a pleasent background.

Merhaba Dostum,

Hi Ivan!

Quite common beetle [or similiar one] in my area. Good composition with white flower. Four bands are well visible. I like colours of this insect - it looks like an old nautical instrument made from wood and brass.

Hi Ivan.
I think the DOF (aperture value) and exposure of the image (first of all reproduction of the flower colour tones) are the key points of the shot. They are refined. However, the image of the fine beetle on a beautiful flowers and smooth green BG are so wonderful as technical aspects. Bravo. Excellent close-up. My compliments.

Hello Ivan,
A very good capture of this Longhorn Beetle, with all details and a very good backgrond with the Yarrow. We miss the Summer with such a photo... Best regards,
Catherine

It sounds almost convoluted...but most accurate in name I am sure..Very good ID...you still retain the brain my friend...my memory is much shorter these days...could have been all that ethanol eh? You have lost nothing nor have your archives...
Bob

Ivan,

What an amazing picture with a 300mm lens and a 1.4 extender. I was sure you had used a Macro lens to get this.

Very clear and sharp. The color of the beetle and the flower makes this a winner.

Thanks for giving me some ideas about what can be done with a long lens.

Bob

Hi Ivan,

This is one beautiful beetle captured with the whole body and limbs in very good sharp details. The small white flowers provide excellent contrast and the blurry green background is so pleasing. I like the choice of tall frame here and well done. Have a wonderful weekend and best regards.
