Brown Hairstreaks (Thecla betulae) occur in small numbers in Southern Sweden. They fly in August and early September in the vicinity of sloe bushes, which is the host plant. The surprisingly large white eggs can be found near the tips of small branches in the winter.
They visit flowers like knapweed or bramble and
are often seen together with Purple Hairsteaks on oaks where they feed on honeydew secreted by aphids.
Despite the striking flame colours of the wing undersides they are not easily seen as they often keep to the tree-tops, where they mate.
The female, shown here, is brighter than the male and has a large orange-brown patch on the upperside of the forewing, which she occasionally shows.
In fact the Swedish name is Eldsnabbvinge, which means 'Fire Hairstreak'.
I took this picture with my Coolpix 4500.

Hallo Ivan,
thank you for posting this beautiful Thecla betulae which is not so often seen. Nice natural colours and good sharpness.
Peter

Hi Ivan,
that's wonderful, what a beautiful butterfly, I love the sharpness and the colours, excellent
Sabine - wishnugaruda

Nice shot with realistic colours of wing and good details!

Hi Ivan, you've just made me rather jealous! I've been hunting around for one of these for a couple of weeks now and not seen one. We have lots of blackthorn where I live and I know they are around but I think they all go into hiding whenever I step outdoors with my camera. This is a stunning image, great colours and lovely composition. Sharp, detailed and a great background, its a winner in my book. Can I ask whether you a personal question? Do you levitate - or alternatively, at what height and on what flora did you see this one? Did you watch it for long to see what it did? Your note is great but I'm hoping for even more tips on sighting one ;)

Hi Ivan,
Great shot of this beautiful butterfly.
You captured the texture and colors of the wings with excellent details.
I also like the way it is standing on that leaf, as though it were a platform. A wonderful POV and composition, with perfect DOF.
TFS. : )

Hi Ivan,
Perfect capture, with excellent sharpness, details, color, texture, light, pov and dof. I've made a WS with a different composition. I hope you don't mind.
