[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Last summer, by the middle of August there was a drought in Southern Sweden and water was becoming a scarce commodity.

Like other creatures this Map Butterfly (Araschnia levana) needed moisture and this one found it on the mud of and old claypit that has become a nature reserve.

The Map butterfly shows seasonal dimorphism, the spring generation showing an orange basal colour to the wings, whereas this summer form has blackish brown.

This butterfly is remarkable for us in Sweden since it has only been with us for about 12 years. It is thought to have strayed over from Denmark and is now spreading northwards.

It is now one of the more common butterflies in Scania

This shot was taken with the camera hand-held at a distance of abot two meters.

Hello Ivan,
This is a really nice specimen. I like its dark color and those great details you caught. Nice POV and composition too. The image in general is a little grainy but it is a minor nit for such an unusual picture. Thanks,
Claudine

Hello Ivan,
a beautiful picture of this fresh levana-specimen. As always, I like the natural colours of your pictures. Focus on the left wings is pretty good. Resolution and sharpness could be a little higher.
Best wishes, Peter

Hello Ivan, let's not mention your steady had here. That, I've already said. But what a nice composition, with a nice blurry background. One thing; the forground has many white dot's; maybe if you repplace them with post processing by the same brown color as the mud, the forground mud will be less distracting. I haven't got much time for now, but I try a little workshop later.
Good weekend, Jacob

Hi Ivan

A very nice piece of macro!
The butterfly looks excellent against the colors of the BG here and the timing here was also very nice, capturing it a very well explained moment.
Good sharpness, lovely natural colors and great exposure management.
Very well done!

bravo and TFS

Hi Ivan.
Outstanding at composition picture. The pose of the butterfly and cropping are perfect at high level. Image of the butterfly is colored, sharpened and details excellently too as well as the FG. The separation of the BG is also extremely nice. Great shot. My best regards and TFS.

Hi Ivan

For a moment there I thought this butterfly's landing zone was something else than mud, but then fortunately your notes correct my thoughts. Interesting how these insects after so many ages suddenly 12 years ago decided to go and seek happier hunting grounds. I am sure you people do not mind as it is a very beautiful species. I just wonder what kind of impact their larvae might have on the environment or ecology.

I like your composition and POV. The colours are splendid (especially on the mud, ha-ha-ha), the details are well defined, and the exposure was managed excellently.

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot
