[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
One of the early signs of Spring in Europe, including Southern Sweden is to see Rooks (Corvus frugilegus)gathering twigs to build its nest.

Rooks nest in colonies in copses of deciduous trees. They start now an lay their eggs at the end of the month and the beginning of march. They feed on worms and insects in the soil but also on grain. The bare featherless area round the base of the bill allows that part to remain relatively clean when a rook probes into the soil. Rooks also scavenge at city dumps and rookeries in built-up areas can be a nuisance owing to the mess caused on the ground below.

In Scania fledgeling rooks are regarded as a delicacy and in the UK they were eaten in pies.

Interesting to note that the word 'rookie' has nothing to do with this bird. It is a corruption of the word 'recruit'.

This image was taken today when it was sunny for most of the day. The sunshine allows the purple iridescence of the plumage to show. He was obliging enough to perch on the lower branches to allow this POV.
The distance was about 10 meters and the camera was hand-held. After moderate cropping the image was reduced in size and selectively sharpened.

A very nice low-angle capture of this fine specimen Ivan, thanks to the temporal sunshine, the purplish-black coloration of the plumage is easily discernible. That quizzical glint in the eye compliments the nicely focused image my friend, thank you indeed for sharing this fine composition with us.
Best regards,
Mehmet

hello Ivan

you kno what, if there is one kind of birds that i don't love
it is the birds like the ravens and the crows, there is certainly a raison
of that but i can not tell you why, but since i am member of TN
and taking my time to view images of that kind (raven and crow) birds
i am starting to love them in images and i decided that i will try
some shots of them to go get the details of their dark plumage
like it is in your image, i love your POV and the way you framed
it on the image and i love the catch-light of his eye

in your image there is a little blue tones dominance Ivan,
i did a workshop to do the corrections (i will posted in few minutes)

TFS

Asbed
p.s. i already done shots of Common Grackles
but for me their are not the same things as the ravens or crows

Hello Ivan,
Beautiful bird. Not often seen here, I guess.
Good pose and thus moment..

In my notes today I was ref'ing such a bird, same family but not exact...and the blue tint/sheen is cool for spring thoughts. Yet is is a good register along with notes. You and Ulla must have had an outing eh?

Hi ivan

Great capture of the Rook, I like the composition and its a really nice pose, good detail and the colours are excellent especially the blue sheen you have captured on the Rooks feathers, as for your notes about eating them I have a really old cookery book that has a recipe in for Rook Pie, I don't think we eat them anymore, well at least hope we dont.

TFS Hil

Hello Ivan
This is a fine picture showing the beauty of Rooks..Many dont like them but I do and there is a colony a few miles from me that I know of that I have watched from afar...Exemplary sharp details and colour reproduction on what is the hardest of colours to reproduce with sharp detail.
A fascinating note also...I actually have a Rook Pie in the oven..Do you think I should serve with mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables!!?
Best Regards
Paul

I don't think we have these birds in NZ Ivan. I have heard of them though. Good shot, and that bare featherless area round the base of the bill shows up well.
Looks like there's plenty of dry twigs for them to gather for their nests too.
Well done

Hi Ivan

Great POV and good detail. Well capture. Funny that the Rook has a much better 'press' than the Crow - a School of rooks, but a murder of crows!

James

Hello Ivan,
Very beautifully captured of the Rook!

the clarity on the plummage is awesome!
thanks once again for a informative notes and is useful!

Hello Ivan,

Very nice picture of this rooks. Good composition. Great sharpness. Good light and colours. The magpies here are also very early to build their nest.
Cheers,

Mariki

Hi Ivan,
A fine capture of this crow like bird. Very well taken with excellent composition and details. A very good angle of view. Good informative notes. Thanks a lot for sharing.

What a sleek bird you have here, Ivan!
He looks as if someone has been polishng him!
Super sharp image and how well he poses on the intertwining branches!

I think you will find that rook has not been on the menu in the U.K. for centuries! It is probably linked to the nursery rhyme 'Sing a song of sixpence' when 24 blackbirds were baked in a pie!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

merhaba Ivan,
I think your weekend was great for photography. You capture this black bird with a perfect shot today. Black is hard color as like pure white; but you managed and presented very nicely shiny plumage details. eye contact, POV and composition great. Thanks a lot. best wishes

I like the lovely colours too.TFS.

Hello Ivan,
A fine point of view and you capture excellent details in the black plumage!
A fine pose exposing the characteristics well, all presented in a well balanced composition...
DOF works well isolating the bird nicely and creating this space feeling!

Yep, nothing i like better than a Rook pie for dinner! Although as Bev says, the old rhyme here is about Blackbirds, not Rooks!
Anyway, excellent capture of detail in those dark feathers and a very good composition indeed, well done!
Paul

Hi Ivan,
always difficult to get a shot of pitchblack birds. But you mastered those contrasts well, the feathers retain this wonderful purple shine. The composition is just great. And its a species not often (if at all) seen on TN! Thank you for presenting it.
Best regards
Dietrich

Superbe prise, beaucoup de netteté, de détails, bien mis en valeur avec cette composition.
