[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Rook (Corvus frugilegus) is usually regarded as a black member of the crow family, the distinguishing feature being the greyish area of bare grey skin at the base of the bill.

In the early spring, however, it has a glossy plumage that has a purply blue irridescence, which makes it a very attractive bird when seen in the right light.

It is common in most of N. and C. Europe but has a patchy distribution in S. Sweden, being more common in Scania.

IT is the friend of the farmer, spending much of the breeding season looking for insect pests in freshly ploughed and sowed fields.

As it nests in colonies in tall trees, it can however be a nuisance in town parks, leaving a mess of droppings and sticks on the ground.

This shot was only cropped by about 25% as it was taken at a distance of only about 5 meters.

After size reduction, it was only sharpened a little.

Hello Ivan,
Great shot, very nice capture with a superb composition
Superb detail,very sharp and clear.
Thanks for posting.

We see this bird at high altitude in the Himalayas too, Ivan. The common crow with its harsh caw-cawing and scavenging habits lives near human settlements only.
This is an excellent picture of the Rook with the light creating a kind of halo on its shiny feathers around the face. The look in the eye is evocative of curiousity at something in its visual range and unaware of your presence.
TFS.

Hi Ivan,
A truly black widow!
Impressive their intense black feathers and the colors hidden in the black, like the blue over the eye.
I like the pose got and the projected shadow.
A very good composition.
Congratulations and thanks for share.
Best regards,
JM

bonjour ivan
ces oiseau sont souvent repousses a cause de leur mauvaise reputation, mais avec un cliché comme celui-la ou il semble poser, son image de marque va s'ameliorer.
bien vu

Hi Ivan, this is a great shot of the Rook. You've done a great job in presenting the plummage with great colour and detail. your composition is very good with him looking back to expose that eye.

Thanks, John

Hi Ivan ,

very well done.

Hej Ivan
It is nice to have good weather again :) As we can see on your shot that even Rook was enjoying this sunny day. Cool and big bird which I saw when I was visiting Skåne. We have them too here in my area but few miles from the city. They are on my list to be photographed someday :)

Nice shot & TFS

Hi Ivan,
Excellent picture of this Corvus. You succeeded even to show the irridescence of its plumage. Absolutely amazing how good you render the dark with such a strong light. Chapeau!
Best regards

I love your shot of the Rook. I do like taking pics of Crows as I find their behaviour very amusing. You have a wonderful sheen on the black feathers and very sharp around the beak and eye. Wonderful POV.

Hi Ivan,

extremely nice, this difficult shot of a purely black bird! You caught the precise angle of light to make it shine. Thanks for showing,
Cheers,
