[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
After cropping and resizing most of us sharpen, increase blur in places and increase or reduce brightness and contrast and colour saturation. This is permitted in the Terms of Service.
What is also permitted is to touch up and remove minor spots cause by dust, etc.

But what is not permitted, as I understand it, is to remove, or clone away, more major objects that in the photographer’s opinion spoil the picture. You can compare with the cropped and resized original in the WORKSHOP.

I took this shot of a Lesser Whitethroat unaware of a dead twig that partially obstructed the centre of the image. As in my opinion the rest of the image was worth saving I improved it by some clone work using Photoshop 4. Now I know that some can do a better job that I did, but here that is not the issue.

The issue is whether in your opinion what I have done is acceptable under the TOS. If you think what I have done exceeds the spirit of TN, please give me your reasons and don’t give any points.

I appreciate any critique on this one, whether it is positive or negative, with or without points.

Hi Ivan

Very cute little bird on a torn ;-) I think that it is allowed and I think that you did a good job here. It wasnt a heavy workshop and naturality of the picture is not changed (and that is the most important thing)

Long time ago I posted a photo of Lycaena phleas with a grass flowers and in the comments and critiques there were the advises that I should remove that grass.

About a photo: good composition, nice sharpness, good blured buckground. I like what you did with the original file

Good job
Best wishes
Krzysztof

Hi Iavn,
your PP work here is first class. I don't think what you have done should be considered as against the TOS really. The main focal point of your image has remained unaltered, aside from the sharpening which all of us do here of course. I think the removal of the blurred Rose Hip and the twig in the FG hardly merits this being removed, and i think it would be unjust if it were. One of the reasons for using digital cameras is the freedom it allows us to get the best out of the shots we get, and gives us the opportunity to learn from them.
Anyway, the image itself is very well done. The pose of this Whitethroat is what makes it so good, and the composition too. Your PP is simply making the most out of what is already a lovely shot.
tfs and have a good weekend!
Paul

Hi Ivan!

Very nice portrait of cute bird. I like diagonal composition with thorny twig. Bird is very sharp and detailed. Great light. I think cloning in this case is allowed - your picture looks much better without red spot.

Hola Ivan,
Preciosa toma de este pequeño pájaro, bonita pose, excelente definición, luminosidad y textura, bien contrastadas con el fondo, saludos

hello ivan,
nice capture, i have seen the workshop and i dont think that you have violated the tos of TN, as a matter of fact you did a good workshop here, nice shot, liked the composition and the pov too,

Hello Ivan,
good question you raised here. I can only give my personal feeling about this. I feel that cloning a minor part (dust, or as my camera has a permanent scratch on the sensor) could be removed. For other, bigger parts of the picture I feel it is not okay. Just go out again and try to capture your object again in a better setting. This also improves your skills and eye for composition. Little twigs don't bother me that much although a clear view can make a nice picture.
Besides, a nice picture of the whitethroat but removing larger parts as the rosehip is not my style.

Regards, Jacob

Hello Ivan,

Hello Ivan,
This is a good point that you bring out. When I started posting here, I didn't even know how to use the clone tool. So, I used to post my pictures without using it, never. I started having comments that I should have cloned out this and that. So I started using it and like you, I wrote notes about it. Then, I had some of my pictures removed... No big deal but I stopped doing it. I'll be honest with you, now, I use it when they are very disturbing elements in the picture like in this case you are presenting us but I don't tell anymore :)

This is a beautiful capture of this nice specie with great details, perfect exposure, beautiful composition, POV and pose from this lovely model. Well done with interesting issue. Thanks,
Claudine

This is really beautiful! I like the pose and the eye and as always the photo is technically perfect with great exposure and sharpness.

To ask your question I don't think this is manipulation as those objects is not the purpose of the photo and is not affecting the image in any serious way.

Best regards/Bengt

Because I do not post photos myself, I am not able to make a comment if this photo is allowed according to the rules of Trek Nature or not. But I can tell you that this is indeed a very impressive shot, and I for one do not find fault. It is a cute little dainty bird, with beautiful features. Perfect shot from my point of view. Thanks for sharing.

Hej Ivan
Really nice shot of this Lesser Whitethroat! For me is not problem that you did. Sometimes I remove branches or similar stuff from BG for better performance. For me who work with magazines are everyday work :)

Hej Ivan,
a very nice picture wiht good details and nice compo.
What about the cloning; For me it's a bit to much, you have changed the BG and the twig in the FG.
Agree with Jacob, the best is to find a good POV out in the field and also learn how the aperture works on DSLR for a good DOF.
And I'm glad you took this up.

Hi Ivan,
Certainy, that red spot just over the bird's head seems like a kind of crown or something like this.
So I think this enters under the term of little retouching to remove some disturbances. I mean, you are not altering the composition or adding any new element to the original picture (IMHO).
The lighting here is great, the same than the bird's pose, and you got beautiful details all over.
Well done and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
JM

Hi Ivan,
If the tree falls in the forest and there's no one there to hear it, does it make a sound?
In other words, if something is deemed a distraction by the artist, and it is removed in expert fashion, who's the wiser?
Digital photography demands it..To not use it prudently is inherently unwise..IMHO :)

Very nice work.
Howard

Hi Ivan,

nice shot. Very pure and sharp shot. Excellent DOV and POV. Very well done. tfs. Stev

Hi Ivan,
Sweet composition of this well exposed bird.
Fine focus detail, light, POV/pose, and DOF.
I don't personally mind you cloned the parts you did.
May be stretching the rule a tad perhaps.

Richard

Hello Ivan,

This is a beautiful capture from you and I must say, a very good PP. You composed the image very good and in spite of the darker background you exposed the white feathers perfectly. The details are sharp and well defined by a great contrast.
As far as it concerns your question, I don't know if I'm the right person to tell whether it exceeds the spirit of TN or not. It doesn't bother me. I guess Howard (Marhowie) told it in the most beautiful way. I agree with him.

With Friendly Regards,
Eddie

Hi Ivan,
Very nice portrait
Excellent sharpnes and light management
cheers

I think the purpose here is to observe nature. If the removal of certain distractions enhances that objective, it should by all means be acceptable. Maybe even encouraged. I think, if someone alters the subject itself or places it in an untrue situation, then that violates the spirit and should be unacceptable. I like what you did here.

Hello Ivan,
Fantastic photo of this Whitethroat. Very good sharpness, composition, POV and BG. The light is perfect.

Why not change little details through, cropping, resizing or cloning when it makes the quality of the photo better? I fully agree with Reid (go2stones).

Hi Ivan,
Wonderful shot of this beautiful bird with sharp details on its plumage and perfect exposure. The lighting and focus are neat and you have captured a fine pose here set against the darkish BG. In my view PP work is very essential in digital cameras and unless one tries to manipulate the basic photograph with effects it is perfectly OK. Cloning is as essential a tool as any other to prop up the levels in a pic. Here you have done absolutely marvellous work and presented a great picture. Kudos.

H Ivan.
What a cute picture and amazing pose of the bird. I am impressed do much. Fantastic lighting and reproduction of bird's plumage. Dark BG is great and underlines the beauty of the bird superbly. My congratulations. Excellent shot.
Alexei.

Hi Ivan,
very well managed, perfectly natural looking result of postwork. You got a very good result with removing the main problem: the grey blurred parts caused by an otrusive twig.
To my taste I would have maintained a bit more of the background here - not so much in terms of maintaining an undisturbed document of nature, but in terms of saving its aesthetical qualities, the blurred red rosehips in particular.
But as seen here, it is a clear, well detailed, fresh-looking portrait of the Whitethroat.
With thanks, and best regards,
Peter

hello Ivan,
I missed this fine picture. I don't mind your changes, because it doesn't change the subject. I find so touching the contrast between this fine Whitethroat and the thorns of the plant. It makes out of it a very expressive shot.
