This morning we took the chance of visiting a local nature reserve before the forecast wind came up as it was sunny. I also took the opportunity of experimenting with my new camera.

Grizzled Skipper (Pyrgus malvae)

Swedish name: Smultronvisslare, meaning ‘wild strawberry skipper’.

This species has been shown many times on TN, especially at this time of year, as it is a springtime species in N. Europe. Further south it occurs in two generations. Though nowhere abundant it is widespread in most of Europe including southern Britain and S. Sweden.

The larval host plant is varied and includes various species of Potentilla. In Sweden it is mainly Wild Strawberry (Fragaria vesca).

I have always found it difficult to take a good picture of this species because of the wing pattern making the white parts OE. Here I tried an underexposure by two stops and it seemed to have worked.

This is the first time I tried an ISO of 800 to allow a faster shutterspeed and a good aperture. This is the advantage of 15 megapixels!

This was taken with my camera hand-held at a distance of about 1.8 meters (6 ft). After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was slightly sharpened.

Hi Ivan.
What a surprise. Anne and you have pictured the same species and shared them next each other. Superb sharpness and details of the fine specimen. Every hair is visible perfectly. POV is great and butterfly poses to you excellently too. I like impressive, dark and nicely smoothed BG. It is wonderful canvas for this beauty. Bravo. Well done.

How sharp is your picture illustrating beautifully this butterfly (or is it a moth??!!, in French we use the same word for both, papillon and I'm always mixed up!) Funny because Alex99 tried his new prime lens on a butterfly and there you are too with your new camera! Wow! I like the angle of the butterfly, the creamy background, the beautiful earth tone of the picture. Thank you, it is superb,

Francine

Hi Ivan. A new camera i see i have looked at the 50D btut having the 40D i will stay with it for a while. You have put it to good use all ready with this fine picture of the Grizzled Skipper . Your top POV lets us see the wing markigs withgood detail and colour. The white markings look ok with underexposing by two stops. well done TFs.

Hello Ivan,
this is a perfect picture of the small skipper. All parts of the specimen are very sharp
up to the antenna tips. I like the clear presentation of the the wing pattern and the
well working contrast against the background.
Best wishes, Peter

I've said it in the past, Ivan...Pl come over to India, be my guest and let me learn from you!
You're simply the best!

Hi Ivan,

You are Alexei's neighbor today and both of you shot butterflies with long telephoto lens. Both have excellent result even with different brands of equipment.

You have registered this image in perfect perch at the tip of the leaf with so much details exposed. The framing is flawless and TFS.

Best regards,
Jusni

Very nice capture of Grizzled Skipper, I especially like composition and DOF. I agree with you that it is very difficult to take so good photo (I have problems with butterflies all the time... :>), but you were lucky and the picture was taken in very prefessional way :>

Hi Ivan,

I thought you had new equipment and you have just confirmed it. Congratulations and use it well. I think you have mastered it already. I don't remember seeing a Grizzled Skipper before but it is very beautiful. The colors, details and textures are wonderful. I love the diagonal composition and marvelous background.

Hello Ivan,
I have to come say hello to my Skipper-neighbour! I'm a little late, but I was in Valais where I don't have internet.
Ver sharp picture of this small butterfly which is indeed not easy to photograph. I made the same experience.
Simple and natural shot.
Have a nice day
