Willow Warbler (Phylloscopus trochilus)
Swedish name: Lövsångare (Meaning ‘leaf warbler’)

This warbler arrived a couple of weeks ago from Africa where he spent the winter. It is one of the most common species of bird in Sweden and one of the most common and widespread in the rest of Europe. Easy to distinguish from the Chiffchaff by its song but more difficult to ID visually, though the light-coloured legs are a good feature, those of the Chiffchaff being dark brown.

The Swedish name not only refers to its habitat among deciduous trees where it is camouflaged among the leaves, but its song in descending tones can be likened to a falling leaf.

There were many singing Willow warblers in this nature reserve.

Once again I was experimenting with my new camera to see what I could do using ISO 800. Here the warbler was almost against the light and though my spot metering compensated, I still had to adjust in the PP work. The high ISO gave me the luxury of a high shutter-speed and a better aperture instead of my usual 5.6.

The bare branch and the leaves at the bottom of the image are those of Viburnum opulus

This was taken with the camera hand held at a distance of about 6 meters (20 ft). After moderate cropping and size reduction this image was slightly sharpened and adjusted for shade by about 25 %.

Hello Ivan,

Great capture of this beautiful bird.
Light,focus and sharpness are excellent.
Fantastic composition and good notes.

The low viewpoint isolated the warbler perfectly from the surroundings Ivan, while the relatively narrow aperture captured almost everything in sharp focus, reproducing the bird in rich detail. Obviously the warbler is not choosy, looking quite happy on a Viburnum branch!
Cheers,
Mehmet

Hi Ivan,
These guys have great balance That little twig it is standing on is not very thick, and almost vertical.
Its a lovely capture, nice and clear, showing real character in this little fellow.

I yes. Ivan you are the king of birds. This image has a little bit of Jane in it. Jane is always looking up. The contrast is also similar to Jane. Fine show. Your notes are very good as well.

Hello Ivan!
What a nice capture of singing bird sitting on the top of tree :) I like timing and natural contrast between bird and sky. The I tried to say Swedish name "Lövsångare" but it is impossible to do that without mistake! :)
Greetings from sunny Lodz,
Radomir

Hi Ivan.
I think I have met and pictured this species these days. However, distance is too long and I am not absolutely sure that it was Willow Warbler. Yours is amazing. Shot looks like 3D-image. Details of the bird are ultimate and pose and captured moments are sweet. My warm compliments and TFS.
Alexei.

Hi Ivan, the best moment to take the pic..we can hear the sound of this willow..ehehe....top quality of sharpness and colors,i like a lot this sky as background, thanks for share!!My best compliments, have a nice day,LUCIANO.

Impresionante el realismo que consigues en algunas de tus fotografía Ivan, y esta no es una excepción. Buena luz y un preciso enfoque al motivo. La expresión del ave acaba de rematar con elegancia este buen trabajo.

Hi Ivan,

By now you know how much I love singing birds but this Warbler is exceptional. The face and opened beak are just marvelous. The details of the face, eye, plumage and wings are razor sharp. A wonderful pose, lovely setting and beautiful composition.

Jane

hello ivan,
fine capture,i liked the pose of the singing bird and the way it has balanced on the plant. well composed shot,
tfs & regards
pankaj

I was wondering how you had managed such a clear and balanced shot with those camera settings and found the answer in your note, Ivan. That really is an innovation worth trying and I might put it to use today afternoon when the sun is a little less oppressive :).
The Willow Warbler looks very cute in this picture and its posture and open beak suggest it is singing away merrily.
Regards.
Ram

Hi,
Looks like he is singing for glory and deserves this fine portrait. tfs.

Good detail and natural colours. It hard to think this has flown from africa and look so fresh and healthy. Well done TFS.
