Barn Swallow Hirundo rustica

Swedish name: Ladusvala, which means ‘barn swallow’.

This species, like all swallows, arrive in Europe in the spring from tropical Africa to breed while there are insects about. It arrives in Sweden in the end of April. It is found all over Europe but has become less common in recent years, probably because there are not so many insects and places to build their mud nests.

It builds its nest on ledges found in old out buildings, and under bridges.

At the end of the summer and beginning of the autumn they begin to gather, often on power lines and often in large numbers before leaving in September for Africa.

At this time they feed up on insects in the air to accumulate a fat reserve to enable them to fly south. They also feed on the way.

We saw a row of swallows on power lines while driving in the car. As they were too awkwardly placed to photograph them from the car we stopped and got out. They stayed put until I raised my camera when they then started to fly away and this was taken at that moment.
T
I took these shots at a distance of about 10 meters (33 ft). After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was sharpened.

Hello Ivan,
Fantastic photo of this starting Barn Swallow. Two weeks ago I´ve tried exactly the same with a Barn Swallow, but the distance to the bird was to large.
You succeeded very well. Great photo! A pity of the dots near the tail of the swallow. Fantastic composition.
Regards,
Peter

Enhorabuena Ivan, quien ha intentado fotografiar a una golondrina en el aire comprende la dificultad de esta toma. Bien encuadrada y contraste de color estupendo.
Un abrazo.

Hi Ivan,

I have never seen a Barn Swallow out in the open like this - only in their nests in dark places. This is truly a gem with the marvelous wing positions and the excellent view of the face. I love the tail feathers which remind me of scissors. Beautiful colors, fine details, and a superb composition.

Jane

Everything is south of you Ivan:-) I hope this one makes it. I see you have adopted or reminded me of Asbeds style! Neat!

Hello Ivan,

I saw the swallows gathering on the telegraph wires last week, ready for their their incredible journey south. However, yesterday, I saw one lone bird swooping across the sky and wondered if it had missed the mass exodus! Will it travel alone, or remain here over winter - surely a death sentence with the lack of flying insects!

A super shot, clearly showing the lifting of the feet, like the lifting of the wheels on an aircraft, upon take-off! Good positioning of the bird in the 'strong' section within the frame.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Ivan,
Well timed shot of barn swallow. Looking at the caption "Preparing to Fly South", I was amazed since it is actually facing South through the computer monitor screen.
