As we were tired of waiting for the sun to come out, which it hadn't done for nearly 3 weeks, we decided to take the car out into the greyness to see if we could capture something.

We came to a little fishing village, almost deserted at this time of the year. I saw this male Red-breasted Merganser about 20 meters away. As I pointed the camera at him he started to take off.

Luckily, in anticipating poor light I had set the camera already at ISO 400. The Distance implied cropping by 60% and consequent sharpening after size reduction. This caused a grainy noise that I didn't remove as I wanted to keep the drops of water intact.

The Red-breasted Merganser (Mergus serrator)overwinters along the coasts of N. Europe. IN the summer it breeds by lakes in Scandinavia and N. Britain. It tends to be seen in small groups.

Hello Ivan , very good action photo but a little bit grainy ,TFS.

bonjour ivan
tres bon timming,l'oiseau est bien net.
les ailes sont bien figées et l'ensemble bien coloré.
bravo;
laurent

Thank heavens, you did well not to remove the noise and kill those fine details on the wings too, Ivan.
The take-off moment with water drops flying all around is the heart and soul of this capture, plus the posture of the bird with its body and wings stretched into the initial thrust.
Cosmetic embellishments would mar the impact of such a fine action shot.
Thanks.
Ram

Hi Ivan,

I envy you the wonderful birds that you can find! Your timing was just right on this one. I like the splash in the water and the details of the wings.

hi Ivan,
bonne prise de vue au décollage :) on perçoit parfaitement le mouvement et la vitesse. Il y a un peu de bruit, mais c'est surement du à la recherche du 1/1000.

well done

Hi Ivan.
Amazing action in-flight picture. Excellent exposure parameters: sharpness of the flying bird is excellent as well as the reflections in the water. You are right: water drops are looked very expressive. However, really is ISO 400 a problem for Canon 350D? My best regards and TFS.
Alexei.

Hej Ivan,

Snyggt fångat!

Peter

Hi Ivan, this is a beautiful in action capture of this Merganser. The compostion is excellent. The detail with the water spraying up as he runs across the water is awesome, and I love that eye. Very nice.

Thanks, John

Hi Ivan, a hard species to capture. They never seem to get real close. The taking off i well captured revealing nicely the wingpattern; the white 'mirror'is what you mostly see in a distance. Picture is full of motion. Great

Hello Ivan,
Love this action picture. The timing on the shot is perfect. The water splashing add life to this picture. Enjoy seeing the Red-breasted Merganser about to get into the air. Very well done and tfs.

Hi Ivan,
This is the sort of shot I would love to catch. The water is beautiful with the spray coming up around the sharp bird image. As I look round the various collections i feel quite humble Beautifully sharp. Well done Ivan.
