Hooded Crow – Corvus corone cormix

This little chap came to our garden yesterday and enjoyed himself thoroughly! First of all he had a few drinks from the birdbath, then he decided to brave it and have a dip! Once out of the bath he spent ages flapping his wings, preening himself and wiping his face and beak on my rockery plants! After about an hour he sat on a stone by the edge of the rockery shouting for his Mum. I got very close to him and took lots of pictures as he wasn’t bothered about me at all. As we have a fairly high hedge around the garden I thought he might be afraid of flying across to get back to the Pine trees where his parents were waiting. I called on Ivan who went out to pick him up, but as he got close the little chap flew off very nicely, fully capable to look after himself!!

This was taken from a distance of about 5 metres with the camera handheld. It has been cropped slightly and sharpened. (I've included a Geranium in my composition to show that this is in my rockery and I thought it made it look more interesting!)

PS - Thanks to Paul (PVS) for noticing that I've been a bit too quick on this one. If you use NeatImage on the background before the image is reduced NeatImage doesn't cope with the size and here the noise on the left and the right side has not been reduced! Sorry about that! Maybe somebody else can learn from this too!

Hi Ulla,

A superb capture of this youngster, very sharp and a great composition,(only slight thing I see is a line to the right side of this youngster,I guess you have cloned something away in the BG,perhaps it was Ivan standing ???),anyway a nice capture, your grass has the same color as ours, but luckely it is raining at this moment today,

Regards,
Paul

Hi Ulla,
I know how excited one can be once when one has some unexpected captures coming his/her way..and i bet you too fell for the same:)
That said, I would say i am not really bothered about the noise...This is a really superb capture you have here....wow the baby looks really huge and quite spectacular details on the plumage ....the nearness to the subject has given you excellent results with the pose, colours and composition.I like the catchlight in its eyes and the little one's open beak..the tall standing flowers on the left not only adds a nice contrast of white to the grey and black of the bird but also provides a positive compositional element.Very well done...I would also like to add this to my "Open Up"...theme..

TFS & Cheers

Hello Ulla,
Very funny it's this crow. I like composition very much and clear colours of the plumage.
Best regards, Pawel

Interesting story behind this capture, Ulla.
The little one seems to be quite confident of itself and is looking back at you without any fear.
It is a very good image quality wise and I do not have any problem with the BG noise.
If animals are not afraid of you anymore, it can be surmised that you are in communion with them at a deeper and mystical level.
The other day I was standing by a hedge in the garden to see if I could locate a dragonfly there. Suddenly, a Purple Sunbird alighted in front of me just about two feet away. It is a glossy dark little bird. For about one minute, it did its usual routine of getting into and coming out of the bush at a brisk pace, chirruping all the time. I stood rooted to the spot and even tried a few shots with my 105mm. After a while, the bird flew to another location but without giving the impression of being frightened of me.
The incident touched me; unfortunately, the close-up shots of the bird turned out to be really bad.
Thanks.
Ram

Hi Ulla,

Can't get better than this! Great opportunity and fantastic shot. Maybe he wanted you to feed him thinking any Mum would do. The expression on his face is priceless. Razor sharp details of his face, beak, eye and feathers. Superb colors and a beautiful composition on the rocks with the pretty geranioums in the frame. Just wonderful.

Hi Ulla, what a pleasure to read the story of this little bird in your garden, and what more to look at this picture. It is so lovely and nice, the simplicity of it doing justice to the beauty and ludic look of this little fellow. I love backyard stories like this and close to these flowers, the picture is a real joy. Thank you!

I overlooked this one before :) Wonderful picture with funny title :) And even if this is rather "teeneger" that a baby the title is perfect :)
Bravo for very good sharpness and profesional control of DOF (with only 4f!!!).
