Burnet Companion Moth - Euclidia glyphica

This is a day-flying moth that likes sunshine and warm overcast weather. It prefers dry or damp grasslands and flower-rich hay meadows, usually on calcareous soils, while it also occurs along paths and embankments. It is very lively and is often disturbed as you walk through low vegetation, generally just flying a short distance to land well down in the grass that makes it rather hard to photograph. However this one was very co-operative.

Characteristic of this species are the largely orange-yellow hindwings that combined with the warm brown forewings make it easy to identify. The larvae feed primarily on Clover, Lucerne and Common Bird’s-foot Trefoil.

It is a moth found throughout western Europe east to Greece, reaching the Arctic Circle in Sweden and Finland. Its range extends into Asia.

This was captured from a distance of 1/2 metre with the camera handheld. It has been cropped and sharpened. NeatImage on background.

Hi Ulla. You did well to get a good close up of this Moth as you say in your notes they are often found deep down in the grass. You have captured it with your sharp focusing which has given fine detail and natural colours. It has some nice markings on the wings which the light shows of well. TFS.

Hi Ulla,

I have rarely seen a moth during daytime here. An excellent shot of this very beautiful one. The earthtone colors are wonderful and you show the lovely markings in great detail. The green background shows it off perfectly.

Hello Ulla,

I just wonder sometimes how you can improve on previous postings but here you are again! This is a lovely angled shot showing excellent details of the colours and patterns of the wings. I like how the antennae almost extend out of shot! Nicely sharp and pictured well against the blurred b/g.

kind rregards,
Bev :-)

Good to see a Moth sticking to a blade of grass, Ulla, and that too with its wings spread open.

Hi Ulla

Another very beautiful macro shot from you!
It's really nice what you are doing...most people prefer to take photos only of those big and colorful butterflies, where as you see beauty in these nice moths as well :)
I like the shallow DOF you used here to try and isolate as good as possible the subject from the BG. You also had a good timing, catching some of the nicer colors from the second pair of wings.
The details are good and the exposure is very well managed as well.

Bravo and TFS

Hi Ulla,
Green and brown..i love the colour combination
I have found it difficult to get the right exposure while capturing moths. There uis something that doesnt help the work. But the one you have managed here is a crisp and clean shot with good exposure colours and sharpness.
The environment is wonderful with the green habitat showing a great sign of rich life.
Very well done.
TFS & Cheers
