Penduline Tit - Remiz pendulus

This little bird is rare in Sweden but has regularly been found breeding in a couple of places in our wetlands. On a very windy afternoon in early May, Ivan and I managed to find a male that was busy building its pouch-like nest by the edge of a large disused settling pond . The nest was swaying about on a thin branch of a Birch tree. We spent ages there trying to get a decent shot and this is the best I could get.

The male builds the nest using his pointed beak as a needle. By stitching bulrush seeds, catkins and dry grasses skilfully together he produced a beautiful and tidy pendant. When the nest is complete there’ll only be a small tunnel left as an entrance near the top. While busily stitching he pauses regularly and breaks into singing to mark his territory and to attract a female to his fine construction.

It is a migratory bird that overwinters in the Mediterranean area. It is sparsely distributed in S. Sweden where there is water, reed-beds, sallow and birch. They are insectivores but also eat seeds and can often be seen hanging upside-down while foraging.

This was captured from a distance of about 8 metres (26 feet) with the camera handheld. It has been cropped and sharpened.

Hello Ulla,

I know, there have been many times when I have prayed for the wind to stop when I have been out with my camera!
However, you have done well to capture this wonderful house-builder, despite the weather.
This bird is new to me!
I do like its nest. The shape reminds me of baskets that were popular in the late 60's. You have recorded the details well.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Ulla!
You are right, this species is a real master of nestbuilding! And here its "work" is perfectly presented. I like colours and POV, even if some leaves on the right side would be "deleted" :)
In the note - as always - there are many interesting details about species.
All the best from Lodz!
Friendly yours,
Radomir

Hi Ulla,

How wonderful to have the opportunity to see a nest like this! And even better to be able to watch the Tit working on it. It must have been amazing watching him "sew" this together. To make it even more spectacular you captured him inside the nest. Fascinating notes and a wonderful picture.

Hola amiga,
interesante captura,
pov y foco,
hermoso ambiente,
saludos Ulla,

Almost looks like an ancient relation of art in nature...but this one is true art...wow...Ulla you amaze me..and I wanted to reply to something you said about my image but have forgotten. Perhaps tomorrow.

Ulla,

I think your efforts to photograph this skillful builder paid off! This is an awesome, 'behavioral' shot. I think that this type of a picture is the hardest to get as human presence can make the animals stop their activities, whatever they might be. Of course, the mere location of the nest didn't help with photography as well. Overall, you've done very well here. Very nice note as well. TFS.

Best Regards,

Martin

Hello Ulla!

You're very lucky! Fantastic bird and its nest, too :-) Hard to capture, but you did it very well. Both bird and its house are very well visible and detailed. I like BG/FG made from fresh green leaves. Great work!
BTW - in Polish it is called 'remiz'

Hello Ulla, what an excellent shot of this Penduline Tit, in her nest. I've never seen a nest like this, or a bird either for that matter, so thanks for the introduction. Your timing for this shot was perfect to capture the bird, framed in the nest like this. Exposure and focus on the bird are excellent giving very worthwhile results.

Thanks, John

Merhaba Ulla,
En az kendileri kadar yaptıkları yuvaları da çok güzel olan bu kuşları henüz hiç görmedim. Fakat bu kareniz canlısını bize hiç aratmıyor. Oldukça güzel bir çalışma. Elinize sağlık.

Hello Ulla

Just marking the post for now

Rob

With tele-converter attached to your camera, you captured a brilliant image of this cute bird, Ulla.
Both the subjects are complementary here and both are extremely well captured.
I am amazed at the weaving skills of this little fellow.
A delight to go back to this image I had missed.
Regards.
