Small Bluetail - Ishnura pumilio

This damselfly is rare in Sweden and only occurs in a few places here in the south. I found this one by a pond in a local sand pit. This is a young female still in the developmental stage. It was interesting to note how she tended to settle on dry grasses or reeds of her own colour, hence also more difficult to discover. As she matures her colour will change into a greyish blue and the dark brown will turn black.

The male is mostly blue and black. The total length of the Small Bluetail is about 26-31 mm which is slightly less than that of the Common Bluetail.

It is a damselfly that occurs across Europe but it is less common than the Common Bluetail.

This was captured from a distance of about 1/2 metre. It has been cropped, sharpened and reduced in size for TN.

Hi Ulla,

Goodness, the colors of the damselfly are identical to those of the reeds! Beautiful shot with marvelous colors and razor sharp details. The black background is perfect and a lovely composition.

Hello Ulla! What a fantastic shot! Well camouflaged indeed, it's incredible! I really like the dark background and the perfectly sharp image, well done, thanks!

Mario

Hello Ulla!
At first view I believed that this is Sympecma species, but soon after I noted a dark-brown abdomen and everything was clear :>
I have never saw this species in the wild, it is rather rare in Poland. And I see that also in Sweden in it much rarest than the second species - I. elegans.
The quality of picture is very good. I know how difficult is to keep good DOF and sharpness taking pictures of so small Zygoptera species, especially when they are reasting among grass. So summarizing - this is a very good and intersting picture in ALL elements! :>
Best regards and have a nice Sunday!
Radomir

PS. Tomorrow morning I'm leaving Lodz for 2 weeks, so I am sorry for lack of comments and answers before 14 July :>
