[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is the caterpillar of the Eyed Hawk-Moth (Smerinthus ocellata)

Ivan found the female of this Moth early last summer and kept some of her eggs. They hatched and when the caterpillars were large enough we got some shots of them at the end of July. They were then kept in a large jar where they overwintered in cocoons underneath a layer of soil.

At the beginning of June two of these emerged and I will keep my capture of one of these for my next post.
The caterpillars feed on apple trees and on willow bushes.

This specimen was about 60 mm long and was captured with the camera handheld.

It does a trick on my eye. Perhaps I have been up so short and looking so long but it took me a bit to see it...as in can't see the forest for the trees:-) A fine shot and showing the cloaking device is uses by design!

Hi Ulla,

Speaking of camouflage I had to look several times to find the caterpillar. I thought at first there were two leaves. Fascinating shot with excellent details - even of the horn. I look forward to your next post.

Jane

Hello Ulla
This is just fantastic...The camera Work is brilliant showing this gloriously camouflaged caterpillar off perfectly against a dark background. I would love to see a picture of him when nature has run its course.
A good weekend to you and Ivan

Hola Ulla, qué bonita composición, una toma nitida con buen color y muy buena luz. En la miniatura en un principio no vi a la oruga, muy buena mimetización. Excelente macro. Un saludo

Longer break from TN because of my various trips and a lot of interesting pictures from your gallery were overlooked by me. So as you see today it is a good day to watch your pictures much more carefully ;)
Believe me of not but at this moment I have one Sphingidae caterpillar at home - it is Hyles euphorbiae which I try to rear to adult :)
This is nie profile view of very well camouflaged caterpillar. Good contrast and sharpness make this picture nice for watching. Anyway, I am not sure if some noise reduction would not be good idea :)
Friendly yours,
Radomir
