Eyed Hawk-Moth - Smerinthus ocellatus

The green caterpillar in my previous post turned into this beautiful Moth that emerged at the beginning of July. Here you can’t see the eyes on the hindwings as they usually only open their wings when disturbed or threatened when the large eyes may frighten a predator! Here it is posed on a stick onto which it climbed up when emerging. I then managed to get another capture of it on the trunk of the Apple tree where some ants were annoying it and it flapped its wings before it flew off. You can see this picture in the WORKSHOP.

This was captured with the camera handheld from a distance of 1/2 metre. It has been cropped and sharpened.

Way back in my archives on TN I have a moth which looks almost exactly the same...probably in the same family at least. It is a most interesting moth. since I am not fond of them, and since this one is rather large, I did choose to picture it..as you did so well here Ulla. Very nice!

Hi Ulla,

Hard to believe that yesterday's caterpillar became this lovely moth! Great science lesson - thank you. I'm not sure which view I like better. The view of the eyes is spectacular. But the colors and shadings of this shot are wonderful. A beautiful moth shown in fine detail.

Hi Ulla, superb moth, just an amazingly well detailed and coloured image, really good work, hand held!!

P/S.. I used to rear hawk moths for a hobby, if you are very careful, you can stroke these moths along the abdomen (under the wing) and they will open their wings... if you get a chance, try it...

Hi Ulla,

Very beautiful result for that caterpillar. Good composition, nice POV, sharp details and nicely blurred BG. The colours are very nice natural.

Hello Ulla!

Just beautifull. Moth looks great, also with 'scary' eyes in workshop version. Stunning details, colours and composition. You're lucky to see and capture such beauty.

Hola Sra. Ulla.
Esta "Palomilla" si que luce hermosos colores en sus alas, las cuales le sirven para confundirse entre las ramas de los arbustos. La imagen muy bien lograda y con gran calidad que se obseran sus atributos.
Saludos Sra. Ulla.

Hello Ulla,
thank you for posting the picture of the rare and impressive Smerinthus. The picture shows some grain in the wing as if the picture had been overly sharpened. I had a similar problem with one of my pictures and it turned out to be an unfortunate interference between scale pattern and picture resolution. The workshop picture looks better in this regard. Still: her Majesty Smerinthus!
best regards
Dietrich

Hello Ulla,

Two very good captures of this interesting moth.
I cannot help but notice how well camourflaged it is! Its wings have a texture which looks like velvet!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Ulla,
You not only spotted this wonderful 'design' in nature but you also achieved a beautiful image, Ulla.

Hi Ulla

Another splendid macro presentation here from you!
I really like the upper POV here that is parallel with the subject, gives us a gret view for the pattern and the colors on the top of its wings but also allows you to use a shallow DOF in order to blurr the BG nicely.
Very clear and sharp, placed in a good composition, too.

Bravo and TFS
Horia

PS: the WS image is also excellent to view those nice big "eyes"!
