Arran Brown (Erebia ligea)

Swedish name: Skogsgräsfjäril, meaning ‘forest brown’ and so-called as it flies in and around the edges of forests and forest glades, where it visits flowers such as thistles and Scabious.

This species Satyrid has been shown several times on TN.

It is a member of a large genus of Satyrid butterflies and is one of the largest species of Erebia. It is easily distinguished from other Erebias by the white patch on the U/S of the hind-wing (see WORKSHOP).
Its English name originates from a doubtful find on the island of Arran off the coast of Scotland, but it is absent from the British Isles.

It is quite common in the whole of Sweden, except in my province, Scania, where it is only found in a confined locality 2 km from my home. It is also absent from the islands of Öland and Gotland. It flies in July – August but as the larvae take two years to develop it flies mostly on odd years.
Otherwise it is common in Norway and Finland, the European Alps and Eastern Europe. The larval host plants include various species of grass.

This year I cycled to the known locality in the pine forest north of my town, determined to take a good shot of it. This is not easy as fresh specimens contrast so much with the BG that the butterfly tends to be under-exposed while the BG over-exposed (See WORKSHOP).
It was easy to differentiate from the accompanying Ringlets because it looks larger and much darker in flight. As there were very few flowers I had to chase it until it settled, usually in an un-photographable position in the long grass.

The featured shot was taken at a distance of about 1.8 meters (6 ft) with my long lens hand held and after moderate cropping it was selectively sharpened.

Bonjour Yvan,
Happy to see a picture of an Erebia-species. Always a challenge to make good pictures of these creatures! You had good light at disposition and made a pleasing composition. May be the head-part is a little bit unsharp.
Kind regards
Amitiés
Anne

Jag tror att jag har en bild den tillsammans med en turkos blåvinge, där man verkligen ser skilland i storlek på dem.

Precioso documento y con gran naturalidad en el color. Sin complicaciones pero con mucha eficacia.

Hello Ivan
beautiful the neutral tonalities of the Erebia ligea, well contrasting on the background with remarkable details and great focusing. Good sharpness and excellent light on the composition.
Livio

Hi Ivan,
charming, well lighted presentation of Ligea. The workshop is doing the necessary job to verify that ringlet's identity by showing the underside of wings. Very nice to see the iridescence of that fresh specimen's wings.
You really have encouraged me to review my own series of varoius Erebias from the summers of 2008 and 2009. Will be back as soon as my time allows. Heavy loads of work in my job in these weeks, unfortunately.
Have a nice day! With best regards,
Peter

P.S.: Thank you for your visit and very kind words to my Water Ringlet a few days ago. Being an irregular visitor to TN myself, I am always happy and grateful to realize that my friends don't forget me.

Hi Ivan,
the diagonal pose of the butterfly is lovely with good bokeh to enhance it beauty.
The balanced light that hits the wing is so special that it gives a nice glow and silvery reflection.
I like the effect of the light onto the leaves and the graphical effect of the criss-crossing light in the BG.,

regards,
Foozi

parameters like color, DOF and exposure is spot on and its a pleasant picture to watch :-) on the composition front i feel a little off center composition would have had a better impact from the viewer's viewpoint buts that's a personal opinion
