BUMBLEBEES

Here I have had the luck to take a shot of four species at once on two flowers of Brown Knapweed (Centaurea jacea). They are all workers taken in the morning when they still were wet from dew.
Bumblebees live in small colonies consisting of one large queen, a few dozen workers and some males. The workers are usually small versions of the queen and it is the next generation fertilised queen that survives the winter to start a new colony in the spring.
As I am no expert on these delightful insects I stand to correction on the ID but this is what I have come to:

Left:
Red-tailed Carder bee (Bombus ruderarius)
Swedish name: Gräshumla, meaning ‘grass bumblebee’ because it builds its nest in grass or mossy mounds, often mouse nests. It is not common. The hind legs have reddish hair and the body is brown rather than black.

Centre left:
Large Red-tailed Bumblebee (Bombus lapidarius)
Swedish name: Stenhumla, meaning 'stone bumblebee'.
One of the more common species of bumblebee

Centre right:
New Garden Bumblebee (Bombus hypnorum)
Swedish name: Åkerhumla, meaning 'field bumblebee'
It is fairly common in S. Sweden and recently discovered in England

Right:
White-tailed Bumblebee (Bombus lucorum)
Swedish name: Ljus jordhumla, meaning 'light-coloured earth bumblebee'.
Quite a common species in Europe and distinguished from B. terrestris by its general lighter colours

This was taken with my long lens hand-held at a distance of about 1.8 meters (6 ft)in cloudy but fairly light conditions in mid-morning. After slight cropping and size reduction the image was slightly sharpened.

Bonjour Ivan,
Nous sommes encore une fois voisins!
Very interesting posting, I suppose most of us wouldn't have noticed that there are four different bumblebees on the Centaurea. For me very interesting,I never really made the differences between these species. Very instructive note and a pleasing picture to illustrate it.
Un grand merci.
Bon dimanche à vous deux
