Hoverfly Syrphus ribesii

Swedish name: Gul solblomfluga, which means ‘yellow sun-hoverfly’.

Despite English being the primary world language, there are few hoverfly species that have English vernacular names. This is not good! :(. However Dietrich (meyerd) has come up with Common Banded Hoverfly. Not a satisfactory name as the word 'common' is included, but I thank Dietrich in finding the name.

Swedish, a very much less important language, has many more insect vernacular names than the English language does and the status of the insect is now not included in the name as this may change in the future.

I could establish the ID by my image showing the white collar behind the eyes, which distinguishes it from other Syrphus species. I used the new first volume of two on Hoverflies of the Swedish Encyclopaedia of Flora and Fauna.

It varies in size between 8 and 13 mm long. This individual was about 12 mm long and the separated compound eyes show that this is a female.

As, like many species of hoverfly, the larva feeds on aphids, it is regarded as a gardener’s friend.
Here it was taken in the wild on the flower of Knautia arvensis, very popular with many species of insects.

I took this shot at a distance of about 1. 8 meters (6 ft) with my long lens hand-held. After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was sharpened.

Hello Ivan
Great job.

The colours are natural and nice and the exposer really good.
Fine sharpness with a decent DOF.
Great work,

Nu när man har fått den nya NN boken om blomflugorna så blir man om möjligt mer osäker på vad man har fotat :-)
Det finns för många likadana art. :-)

Hi Ivan,
this shot is indeed very exciting. Beautiful stripes and pretty purple petals steal the show. It really pushes the fly into razor sharp image.
I like the yellow black stripe at the abdomen. Well signed as a picture of a fly.

Regards,
Foozi

Hello Ivan,
I like such composition with fly, flower and nothing more. Perfect sharpness, good pose although I were you would cropped this flower a little from right side. I think because you had Carl Linnaeus, so names of species of fauna and flora have since long time.
Best regards, Pawel

Hi Ivan. This is a first class close up of this Hoverfly. Which you have taken with sharp focusing and fine detail. Your use of the light has given the insect as shine to its wings and body, With rich but bright colours. A good top POV so we can see the body markings. Well taken TFS.

Hello Ivan!
Beautiful capture of "No-English-Name Syrphid" (maybe it would be an English name for this species? hehe! ;>). Anyway, I am really surprised that so common species (at least here in Poland) does not have English name :> On the other hand Latin names are and alwasy will be the most important, so I'm not so sure if every single species really need English name :> Maybe for some really characteristic and common species it would be good (educative role, ect.).
According to the photo, I like a lot contrast and beautiful light in you picture. Very nice work!
TFS and have a nice afternoon!
Radomir

Hi Ivan

Another amazing macro with the big lens. Beautiful sharpness and DOF. Great composition. Your "Swenglish" sound good to me :) Don't know why insects don't get English names, there is so much debate over bird and flower names. TFS

Chris

Hi Ivan,
no compliments needed for your hoverfly shot, others did it before me. I limit my comment on the English name. I found "Common banded hoverfly" on the site "www.naturespot.co.uk for Syrphus ribesii. In German it is "Grosse Schwebfliege" according to K. Kormann, 2002. It is on the local authorities on the subject to invent vernacular names. In France they are hesitant about this but they come up with "Syrphe du groseillier" for all members of the genus, a simple "frenchisation" of the latin name.
My best regards
Dietrich
