[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
My first posting of this species showed a female on a knapweed flower. This image shows a male feeding on the flower of a species of Hawkweed (Hieracium sp)
The female has a pointed tip of the abdomen whereas the male has a tip like a brush, as shown here. This is almost a rule for all species of butterflies.

Oberthur’s Grizzled Skipper (Pyrgus armoricanus)

Swedish name: Backvisslare, meaning ‘hill-side skipper’

Though this species is found in most of Europe it is extremely rare and red-listed (acutely threatened) in Sweden where it is only found in SE Scania about 60 km from where I live. As I only have analogue pictures of this species I decided it was time to get up to date and Ulla and I took the car to the most secure locality.

It is probably a relic of the warm post glacial period of the Ice Age. It occurs in Two generations per year, the first in May/June and this one from the end of July to September..

It is found on sunny sheltered slopes that are rich in flowers and where Helianthemum or Filipendula vulgaris, the larval host plants, occur. As it keeps to within 100 meters of its birthplace its spreading power is rather limited and its localities are restricted to an area that is no more than 20 km in diameter.

This was taken at a distance of about 1.8 meters (6 ft) with my long lens hand-held. After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was only slightly sharpened.

Dear Ivan!

I'm always impressed when photographers like you are able to present a first! This Skipper is very beautiful and your picture allows the spectator to get a fine impression of all the details of this insect. Moreover, the superb colour contrast between the Skipper and the Hieracium highlights the plain beauty of it.

Kind regards

Markus

A very fine and colorful picture of Pyrgus armoricanus. Excellent composition and sharpness. I must say that I have a lot of difficulties to distinguish the different species of Pyrgus-butterflies.
Un grand merci

You certainly worked the depth of field to perfection again. Pretty soon if not now, you will be a Master of the depth of field...something which has eluded many a photographer! Even the flora with its bright yellow doesn't distract. Very nicely done Ivan!

Hi Ivan,
very rare indeed and very special capture from you. The composition of this brownish on yellow flower is nature, but clarity and sharpness of the moth is nurture. Your nurtured skills are really splendid.
Excellent execution of a powerful shot.

Foozi
