Intro:
This photo is from our garden where there hoover lots of dragonflies this time of year. Today I decided to try to get some photos of them at the artesian pond next to our garden. I am no entomologist so I hope somebody will correct me if I am wrong about the specie but to me it looks like a Brown Hawker (Aeschna grandis/Brun trollslända).
It was flying all around this pond together with lots of other species of the big dragonflies. I dipped it's abdomen all the time in the water and I guess it was laying eggs or something like that. Please correct me if I am wrong.... ;o)
Geographic info:
This is from our home in the southeast corner of Sweden. The nearest town is Vimmerby. Next to our garden there is a natural pond (artesian / artesisk) with lots of dragonflies.
Technical information:
Canon 300/f4 lens on a Canon 400D body, in rawformat and used Adobe Lightroom for some adjustments before the edit in Photoshop CS3.
Just crop, white balance and a bit hue
Noise reduction with Noiseware professional
Sharpening with Photokit capture sharpener
About the specie:
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
The Brown Hawker (Aeshna grandis) is one of the larger species of hawker dragonfly. The flight period is from June to the end of October.
It is 73 mm long with a brown body and amber wings. The male has blue spots on abdomen segments 2 and 3. This species is highly territorial and will defend its stretch of water against all comers. |

Hej Bengt,
Very clever and well-timed capture of this egg-laying Brown Hawker. They're not easy to photograph. They usually rest in high grass or in bushes where it is hard to capture them. Pretty sharp and I like the light on the wings. Very well composed too.
TFS and regards, Ulla

Hi Bengt
I always find them difficult to photograph as they are not staying still long enough, but here, in this situation, you had its entire cooperation during the eggs laying.
The light through the wings makes for a good reading of the structure.
Have a good day
Charles
