Lot's of work and a switch of camera have kept me from this place for too long. I have missed you all! Hopefully I will be a more regular poster now when things have settled down a bit..... ;o)

It's autumn here in Sweden and as we had frost these last two nights the colours are so intense in the forests. I returned home this afternoon after a week in Brussels and went directly to the forest around our house to pick mushrooms. I sure don't like to be in big towns for that long!

To our surprise we also found this caterpillar inside a very dense and dark forest very close to huge cliffs and hangovers with quite rare lichens. To us it is a bit strange with larvae at this time of year in mid October.

I have tried to identify it but without success so now we depend on your help for this.

It is about 4 cm and yes I know this is the rear end...... ;o)

Hi Bengt. Good to see you posting again with a new camera. great close up shot of the Caterpillar with fine detail and sharp focusing . rich colours . with a good POV/DOF. well done TFS.
Nick..

Hi Bengt.

Think it could be a hawk moth caterpillar...looks very similar to the British Poplar hawk Moth (Laothoe populis)....try www.ukmoths.org.uk for starters..

Lovely caterpillar though!!!

It is a sphinx (easily recognisable from the tail). There are many species of sphinxs. Here a list:

Unfortunately yours is not in that list or is ti Laothoe populi?

Hi Bengt,

Nice to see you posting again. Congratulations on your new camera! This caterpillar almost looks like a green leaf on top of the autumn leaf. Nice colors and good details.

Hello Bengt,
Nice shot of the rear end of a Poplar Hawk-moth caterpillar (Lathoe populi). The similar-looking caterpillar of the The Eyed hawk-moth has broader yellow stripes and is a little more bluish green in colour. Looks like it is on the leaf of one of its host plants, aspen. I trust you are pleased with your new 40D.
I am pleased enough with my 400D not to change it yet.
TFS and best wishes,
Ivan

hmmm -- this looks very like the caterpillar that attacked me (I posted the image this morning), so I am hoping that Argus is right about the ID.
Great details, superb PoV
