Holly Blue female (Celastrina argiolus)
Swedish name: Tosteblåvinge

Though the females of most blue butterflies are duller or brown, here is an example where the female is arguably more attractive. The male is plain blue without the attractive black markings.

The Holly Blue (Celastrina argiolus) is widely distributed in most of Sweden and Europe, though it is rarely plentiful in any one area. This was taken at the edge of a large bog that is a nature reserve

It has two generations, one in the spring and one in summer. The female of the second gen. has a little more black. There are a wide variety of larval host food plants, holly being one of them and hence the English name, though in Sweden Holly is not a native plant as the climate is too cold.

The light bluish undersides of the wings give the impression of a very pale, almost white little butterfly in flight and this is a good way to ID it at a distance.

The actual size of this species of Lycaenid is about the same as seen in the thumbnail.

This was taken with my long lens hand held at a distance of about 1.8 meters (6 ft). After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was selectively sharpened.

Hi Ivan,

nice digagonally shot from this female Holly blue.
I have this year also the female posted on tn.
Very beautiful clarty colours and details.

Gert

Indeed, this is a pretty butterfly from the Blues family, Ivan.
The tinge of blue is prominent on the open wings and the darker markings at the edges make the wings look very attractive.
The image is technically outstanding with fantastic focus and colours on the subject and the neutral BG really does wonders in this picture.
Thanks and regards.

Hi Ivan,
Very beautiful image, great colors (light bluish, holy no doubt), we don't see this blue coloration on the blues found here. Simple composition with contrasting background to highlight the beauty of this Holy Blue. tfs.

Hello Ivan !
What a wonderful shot of this butterfly, so nicely detailed, so sharp, we can see each little hair clearly. The composition and the POV are excellent too, as well as the pose of the butterfly, showing her beautiful wings - I like her color, with dark framing. Good to know, also, that sometimes the females can be more beautiful than the males ! :-) Very well done !
Valerie.

Hello Ivan,
a true-colour presentation of this holly blue which I mostly observe in flight - never resting.
You selected just the right angle to bring the body, the wing surface and the antennae in focus.
The light is well balanced so that neither the white scales of the wing margin are over-exposed
nor the background is under-exposed.
Best wishes, Peter

Hello Ivan,

Your photo shows so well the nice and delicate colors of this tiny butterfly! Very well chosen DOf showing well the pattern of insect's wings, body and head. There is a fine contrast between the blue of the wings and the nicely rendered green of the leaf beneath.

Thank you for sharing.

I wish you and your familly a Happy New Year,
Cristian

Hello Ivan,
At least a female butterfly which is more attractive than the male!! A butterfly I have seen quite often here in Bern. Not easy point of view for this picture, but well photographed with the focus almost on the whole butterfly. I also would like to thank you for your kind wishes and that I have found entrance in your favourite photographers which makes me very happy:-)
Mes meilleurs voeux de bonheur et de santé pour 2009.

Hi Ivan,

Interesting to see a prettier female of this unique specie. The framing of this shot is beautiful and the semi-opened wings and the perch at the tip of that leaf is beautiful. Very neat work with shallow depth and well exposed details on the wings. TFS.

Have a great weekend and best regards,
Jusni
