Réal’s Wood White Leptidea reali

Swedish name: Ängsvitvinge, meaning Meadow Wood White

This species was discovered as recently as 1988 by the French entomologist Réal.

As it is difficult to differentiate from the Wood White (Leptidea sinapsis), its distribution and occurrence in Europe has yet to be detailed but it appears to be widespread, though absent from the UK.

It was discovered in Sweden a few years later and it seems to be widespread except in the very south in Scania.

The most certain way to differentiate the two species is by examination of the genitalia, but as this involves killing each specimen examined, it is better to resort to some fairly reliable field characteristics that I used when I saw it:
1. The legs of this species are chalky white whereas they are blotchy grey in the Wood White.
2. The wings of this species are a little more angular, those of the Wood White being more rounded.
3. This is a female that I saw laying eggs on Lathyrus pratense, not used as the larval host plant by the Wood White in Sweden.

This was taken with my long lens hand held at a distance of about 1.8 m (about 6 ft) against the sunlight. After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was selectively sharpened.

I took another shot of her taken with the light that I put in the WORKSHOP, but I chose the one against the light as I thought it more attractive.

Hi Ivan. This is a butterfly i have not seen before so thanks for posting this fine close up on TN. This is a fine side view and we can see right through the wings with the light behind them. Taken with natural colours and fine detail. All with interesting notes . well done TFS.
Nick..

Hello Ivan,
Very interesting post! I like the effect created by the backlight on the wings and the plant. The butterfly seems ready to fly! I agree with you: this one is more attractive than the other on the workshop. Very interesting note too! We learn every day on this site... Cheers,
Catherine

Delicado trabajo Ivan, por las luces conseguidas que crean un fino y elegante contraluz. Las tonalidades planta-insecto-fondo van a juego; y como no, buen dominio del encuadre.
Saludos: J. Ignasi.

Hi Ivan,

I think the workshop is beautiful but just love how we can see through the wings in this shot. She is a lovely dainty looking lady with wonderful colors and shadings. Wonderful poses in both pictures but I especially like the plant in the second. Two excellent views of the Real Wood White - a new butterfly for me.

Hi,
Very good back lit image, fine composition and exposure. Only the background is bit disturbing (those lines), otherwise fine butterfly with details. tfs.

Hello Ivan
Nice capture with perfect focus and wonderful colors

Ivan:
This is a beautifully lit image of a species with a strange distribution. we appear to have none on the UK mainland, but in Ireland it is much commoner than sinapis. The workshop picture is very useful for ID features once again - thanks.

Hello Ivan,
I've carefully read note about shown species and it was interesting. On the photo look very modest and surely I wouldn't pay special attention. Maybe I'll take shot its some day.
Regards, Pawel

Hi Ivan,
so hey come even finer! That's definitely a very delicate butterfly. Taken in contre-jour it gives the animal elflike fragility. But you know all that. My compliments to this beauty. Some cookie points are missing out, sorry.
Best regards

Hello Ivan!

Congratulations for this catch! Very nice both pictures and interesting note. I was wondering how to differ species of Dismorphiinae without killing them - thank you for tips! Very good post with real TN spirit. BTW - I saw few Wood Whites in Botanic Garden but I'm afraid I don't know which species exactly :-) - look there - http://botaniklodz.pl/bielinkowate.html#Wietki

Hello Ivan,
Having been absent for three days, I discover this rarely shown species. Very pleasnt picture taken against the light, which gives the beautiful transparence to the wings. Thanks also for your explanations showing the differences with L. sinapis. A good thing is to look at the color of the legs, but eventually not so easy to see.
Un grand merci et bon après-midi
Anne

Hello Ivan
