Dark Green Fritillary (Argynnis aglaja)
Swedish name: Ängspärlemorfjäril, meaning ‘meadow fritillary’.

As Fritillary butterflies look very similar with their orange-brown chequer patterned upper side of the wings, it is easier to ID a fritillary when it sits in the closed-wing position, as here.

The English name refers to the dark greenish tinge to the underside of the hind-wing that is so dominant in some individuals that the silver spots look like pearls in moss.

The dark green Fritillary is the most widely distributed species of fritillary in Europe, occurring anywhere where there are flowery meadows, edges of woodland, heaths and moorlands. This was taken at the edge of a mixed forest where there were many flowers.

The larval host plants are various species of Viola and the larva hibernates in leaf litter or crevices after emerging from the egg.

This was taken with my long lens hand-held at a distance of about 1.8 meters (6 ft). Unfortunately the head is in its own shade. After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was slightly sharpened.

Tiempo de mariposas, que hace que nos deleitemos con nuestras cámaras. Bonirta fotografía con fieles colores. La sombra en su cabeza molesta un poquito.
Un abrazo Ivan: Josep Ignasi.

Bonjour Ivan
Très belle prise, excellentes couleurset netteté, très belle saturation.

Today is a holiday here in North India and I feel blessed to find time to browse around on TN.
Needless to say, I have enjoyed looking at some of the pictures posted recently.
In this picture of a Fritillary, you have captured the subtle colours on both sides of its wings very effectively. The close-up image is very attractive despite the head of the subject being in its own shadow.
Thanks and regards.
